Should I return my GTX 1070 and wait for Volta?

Hi,

I have an unopened EVGA GTX 1070 SC delivered to my home. Recent rumors are suggesting that Volta could be out in Q3 2017. I don't know whether I should return my 1070 and wait for Volta or just keep it. I play on 1080p 60 fps for which 1070 should be an overkill but maybe Volta would bring Titan Xp level of performance for the same price in coming few months. I am really confused, please help me out.

Thanks

Tough choice indeed. In this case I would keep 1070. There's no way to know how good new cards can be and even less about future prices. But I think...
Q3 is still 5-6 months ahead. What you will use in the meantime? If you have a working GPU on your machine that can still do the work now and for few more months, then you can wait. But as you mentioned, you play at 1080p 60hz, so what you need for a card better then 1070?

Honestly there's really no predictions what prices it will be, an what performances they'll give. All we have a little idea of are the release dates which are quite far now.
For 1080p a GTX 1070 is definitely overkill, but you could switch to a GTX 1060 instead.

So you're saying that the GTX 1070 is overkill for 1080p60 but you want to return it and buy an even more powerful card later? I don't really get why you bought that card in the first place then and why you would need something more powerful for the same monitor, just upgrade that before you get a new video card or stick it out with an RX 580 for the time being. Titan XP levels of performance on a 1080p60 monitor would be a MASSIVE waste.

I bought the 1070 so that I won't need an upgrade for at-least 3-4 years.

There's still really no point if it's overkill for your resolution. You could easily survive on a 1060 6 GB on 1080p for 3-4 years.

I have a GTX 960 4GB but it won't do 60 FPS on most of the titles. And I only get 4 months for gaming (may, june, july and december) because of my very busy schedule (I haven't even opened my 1070 till now lol). I want to play as many games in coming may, june and july on absolute max settings with 60 fps for which I purchased the 1070 and also because I want to keep it for at-least 3-4 years. Returning 1070 means I have to give up my plan for 3 month gaming but at the same time if I buy Volta, I could keep it for maybe 5 years of more. I don't know how should I prioritize my needs.

My 960 is just 2 years old and FPS has started to drop below 30 in many newer titles. I only want 30+ FPS gaming on max settings for as long as possible and I doubt 1060 would hold good for 3-4 years.

You should expect it to drop down to that much by now. I can guarantee you that the 1060 will last that long, then again, so will the GTX 1070, we agree that it's going to last longer in gaming performance but you're just not getting enough bang for your buck if you're not playing on 1440p. Btw in case you're playing 1080p 144 hz then a 1070 is nice.

I think I am fine with 1080p 60 fps. Just don't want to upgrade for long. Based on my GTX 960 and GTX 460 experience, going with an x60 series card is only good for 1-2 years. But ya, Pascal again is a very powerful architecture so can't comment on 1060.

Tough choice indeed. In this case I would keep 1070. There's no way to know how good new cards can be and even less about future prices. But I think when aiming to play newest titles, no card can hold up for 5 years. So it would be a waste to loose 3 months of playing waiting for something that may never come.

Solution
They'll last longer if you accept that you won't have the best experience running at ultra and turn the settings down to high/medium after a couple years. Hell I'm on a 980 ti at 1080p 144hz and I don't even play on ultra in most games. Having Lara Crofts ponytail be extra wavy or having the textures on the side of a cliff be slightly better isn't worth a 25% drop in performance to me, but that's just my 2c.
