ever since the gtx1070 and rx480 announcements ive been debating with myself on what i should do. i currently have a evga 960 sc 4gb card and have been looking to upgrade my card in some way. im not going to be doing any 4k or 1440p gaming for quite awhile (2-3 years most likely) so i dont need to get a card that can crush games at 60fps in those resolutions. right now im wondering should i get the 1070, the rx480, or should i just sli another 960 and call her good?

my current specs are
990fx g1 gaming motherboard
fx 8350 (at stock speeds for now)
gtx 960 4gb
16gb corsair vengance ram
sp550 ssd from adata
corsair h60 cpu cooler (upgrading to a masterliquid 240 within the next week or 2)

If you're not doing even 1440p for 2-3 years, save yourself some money and get the 480. The 1070 is also out of stock and on backlog pretty much everywhere too at the minute. ~

Get the RX 480. A single RX 480 is I believe 1.5x the performance of a GTX 960, plus you won't have all the heat, latency, and power issues SLI brings with it.

Plus, the RX 480 will still crush any title at 1080P guaranteed.

As of today, the price and performance of the RV480 are rumors.
Wait for some reliable benchmarks and prices.

If you upgrade from a GTX960 to something stronger, make it a big jump or you may be disappointed.
I do not know if a GTX970 would be considered a big enough jump, but such a card should run anything at 1080P well.
If you will not game at 1440P, then GTX1070 is probably overkill.

For certain, I would not go sli if there was a single card option that would do the job.
Dual gpu will win fps benchmarks, but gameplay is better with a good single card.

i guess i should have worded that part about 4k and 1440p better. if i get something like the 1070 i would use DSR to upscale to 1440 or higher but i wouldnt have a native 4k or 1440p monitor for that 2-3 years

a 480 is the best as a 1070 will be bottlenecked by that cpu
if you plan on upgrading a 1070 is a good choice and as for a 960 sli its not much faster than a 970 so about (or a bit slower) than a 480

ive actually seen benchmarks that put 960sli as better than a single 980 which is why im considering a sli in the first place

two 4gb 960s are in some games about as powerful as a 980 but remember some games have poor sli scaling and dont support sli meaning a single 480 is better
as for a gpu a 480 is the best but a1070 is good if you want to get a new cpu later or overclock your cpu given you have such a good motherboard

your going to be cpu bound either way, but i would probably opt for a single good card, as per the previous post from epicness, some games dont support or scale well with sli, and/or dont have release day support for sli, only coming later in patches. SLI is a lot better than it ever was, but these issues do arrise. Either way if you wait a bit, 960's will go on clearance and drop in price, and you will start to see benches of the rx 480.

Alright so far the general consensus is that i get the rx480 when it comes out and to not really bother with sli but until i see legit benches for the rx480 ill wait before i make my final final decision
