Hello:

I have a dell xps 8700 with NVIDIA GeForce GT 720 Graphics card. I want to install a GeForce GTX 650 Ti graphics card. Do I need to uninstall the drivers of the old card first?

Thank you for your help!

Deborah

Solution
Amd card to nvidia - remove drivers first
Nvidia card to amd - remove drivers first
Nvidia to nvidia (as you're doing) or amd to amd - you dont need to remove drivers at all - swap cards & just install the latest ones.
So using driver cleaning software is not really necessary anymore, GPU drivers like nVidia offer a clean installation option, which essentially does the same thing. You do not need DDU unless something is seriously wrong and you have nothing left to try short of reformatting.

nvidias "clean" install will fairly often leave something of the old driver to your pc which can later start causing random driver crashes. It's always recommended that you uninstall you old gpu drivers with ddu.

Look, I remember the days of using driver sweeper, but I have not had to use it since like 2006. If you want to be extra paranoid yea sure use DDU.

Sure you could go and just rip out your old gpu and install new one while your pc is on to save time... or not. It's not being paranoid, it's common sense.

You don't know what the hell you are talking about, DDU is always needed it. Why are you giving your trust in nVidia to do the right thing... you don't know what you are talking about. Psssh... nothing personnel kid.

I see you tried to be clever and come up with something that might be remotely relevant to this conversation, but your insult falls flat, because only an idiot what pull the video card while the machine was on. Using driver cleaning software to get rid of some reminiscence left over by the driver is a completely different discussion. But since you had nothing smart left to say you came up with this ridiculous comment in a moment of desperation. If she wants to use DDU she can, but I can guarantee you if she just downloads the latest nVidia driver and installs it with the "Clean" option checked she would be fine, even without it checked she would be fine. Assuming she has not hosed her machine by some other means.

I get a feeling that your PC building technique isn't quite optimal.

Okay, I didn't mean to start a controversy. I've looked on my Uninstall Programs under the Control Panel and Nvidia isn't there. I have the Nvidia control panel but can't seem to find how to remove from there. Any ideas (that won't start a war!). :)

Who even talked about pulling a video card out of a computer why it was on. Total straw man bruh. Anyone ever recommending that would be totall styupid. You might be able to click clean but its not going to truely go in and blow everything away. Thats why you need DDU to ensure its fixed to the upmost fashion.

you really shouldn't try to act smart about something you clearly know nothing about. while using nvidias uninstall tool might not cause any problems to you but it doesn't mean it won't for someone else. and if you start getting crashes after a unclean install you will need to reinstall windows to fix it unless you feel like trying to find and delete several files from allover your system.

Look I know what your saying, but your asking someone who is obviously not an enthusiast to go download some 3rd party software to removed every single reminisce of a driver. When they can just go download the latest nVidia driver and be fine. And so what if DDU removes every little registry key and tmp file and whatever may be left over, the core pieces like the driver itself gets upgraded and it works. I am not saynig don't use DDU, I am just saying she does not have to.

Now where someone would maybe actually want to recommend DDU is say switching from nvidia to AMD or vice versa, yea I would probably want to remove any reminisce of the opposing platform so that there is not conflict between them. but this user is going from nvidia to nvidia. No ecosystem change.

Just download this you will be fine.

Did you run ddu? if so, it should be fine as it uninstall the drivers some other nvidias programs might be left but that won't affect the new drivers.

@Deborah Hollins
Please don't trust this advice and do not pursue downloading any additional software. This person compares a same eco video card swap out to ripping out the GPU while the computer is on. Such exaggeration and lack of knowledge to a situation exemplifies the common troll and it's not helpful to your problem.

The advice of Madmatt30 is the most sound. There's multiple ways to achieve your situation and it doesn't involve third party programs. I personally would pursue uninstalling the existing drivers, swapping the new card out, and installing the new driver from nvidia. Or, you can run a clean install after swapping the card out. To uninstall, follow this guide if you need help uninstalling your previous drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_13955.html.

Also I like the comic your referencing in your retort, Coldsteel the Hedgeheg killed sonic after all! And lost an ear!

I fixed yer post for you.

whatever kid
