So i just upgrade from a gtx 760 to 970 and i kinda wanted to upgrade my dated cpu, i7 950. But my motherboard is only lga 1366 compatible so i kinda need some help to get a better cpu
here are my specs

GA-X58A-OC motherboard
8gb of ram
gt 970
i7 950 3.06ghz
cooler master psu 1000w
WD Green ssd 120gb
and another wd hard drive but im not to sure

The i7-950 is going to bottleneck that card hard. Any other CPU that works with that platform will also be a bottleneck. 8gb of RAM should also be upgraded to 16 to avoid a memory bottleneck. It sounds like it's time to upgrade to motherboard and CPU that at least supports DDR4. 6th gen Core i7 on socket 1151 is the first generation to support DDR4, but even that is showing it's age now. You probably shouldn't build anything older than 8th generation at this point if you want Intel, or 3rd generation for Ryzen. The Core i3-10100 or Ryzen 3 3100 are faster than 6th/7th gen Core i7 6700K and 7700K now that they support hyperthreading.

You can always go and buy a new CPU/motherboard/RAM. But if you want to extend your X58 system, W3680 will be the best $45 you will ever spend (I have no affiliation with the link below). Your 8GB is an odd (isn't it ironic that even number 8 is odd in this context?) number for a triple channel memory configuration. Do you have two 4GB sticks? If so, buy one more 4GB stick to gain both capacity and triple channel memory configuration for better performance.
