Should I upgrade CPU or GPU for Battlefield 4?

I currently have these:

CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz

GPU: Radeon HD 6870 @900Mhz and 1gb of vram

If I wanted to play Battlefield 4 and next gen games, which should I upgrade?

Im not a big FPS gamer but looking at the specs for Battlefield 4 I'm seeing that you might need an overhaul to play with acceptable performance. This link shows you the minimum specs (which i have a feeling is gonna get many a players killed) vs the recommended specs.

I would say that your GPU is less of a bottleneck than your CPU. With a cpu upgrade you will most likely need to do motherboard and RAM as well.

I'm not sure which mono I have, but I have 4gb of DDR2 RAM so if I upgrade I would probably buy a new mobo and and new RAM.

Try overclocking the CPU and remember the game is still in Beta so it may get tweaks (even after release) that make it more efficient on the CPU or GPU. I suggest get the game and see if you CPU or GPU or both are running close to 100% usage as it would be a shame to get a new board, RAM & CPU just to find its GPU limited to the same performance as before. Also note just from the requirements posted above your CPU meets the recommended while your GPU is between the minimum and recommended.

both, but, i think the cpu is slightly more limiting than the video card. You can generally turn down graphics detail to make the GPU cope, but that doesnt have much effect on the cpu. So yeah, update your cpu/motherboard/ram. I used to have a similar setup, a c2Q 6600 @ 3.4ghz with a 6850. i upgraded to a 3570k and noticed an improvement in all games.

CPU is going to be a problem; its slightly slower then the AMD PII X4 series of chips, and the best chip in that series only gets about 30 FPS, so you'd likely have to reduce settings to at least medium to play well.

Your CPU will be more of a problem than GPU. It is time for new board, cpu, and memory. I wouldn't look at anything less than FX 6300 from AMD or an i5 quad from Intel.
