Hello. I'm brand new to this forum but have often been sent here by searches in the past. I joined thinking that maybe you could help me with this question.
I do a lot of work with geographic information systems (GIS) and use the ArcGIS suite of programs for many projects. Often, the data layers being used are large. For those of you who aren't familiar with this technology, there is a spatial component to data layers (the map or object image), along with attribute data (such as place names, polygon areas, descriptions, etc.). Attribute data are organized in tables and one layer may have over 1 million entries with tens of attributes. Thus, processing is a concern and performing certain geoprocessing tasks can take quite some time.
How can I best upgrade/build a new system that will perform this type of tasking well? I do a bit of gaming too, but nothing too intense.
My current system specs include:
Intel Core i5 3570k clocked to 4.2 GHz
Gigabyte Z77-DS3H motherboard
4x4gb of Kingston HyperX @1600 MHz
Cooler Master Hyper D92
MSI GTX 760 2GB GPU
512 GB Samsung 850 Pro SSD and a 1TB HDD
Corsair CX750m PSU
I love this computer and it serves me well, but sometimes it takes too long to complete geoprocessing of multiple layers. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them. I'm considering a possible CPU/Motherboard upgrade, and/or GPU upgrade. But I would also consider building a new system completely. Thanks
