Hello,

So, I built a computer very recently and I've gotten some more money for an upgrade on my computer.

This computer is a general use computer for office work, gaming, and video editing.
My current specs are:
Processor: Intel Core i5-4590
Graphics card: ASUS GTX 950 Mini
Hard drive: 1TB WD Black Performance Hard Drive
Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33
Memory: G.Skill 8GB Single Channel 1600Mhz

So my question is, should I buy more RAM or buy a SSD?
Upgrading which one will impact the performance the most?

What concerns me is the fact that my 8GB is only single channel because I only put 1 ram stick when I first built my computer.

Solution

I would go this route , then upgrade the memory at a later date.
I'd get more RAM. The best thing about SSDs ; fast OS launch. My PC loads windows 10 in 8 seconds (from power button press) However, you might find you cannot move your Windows copy to an SSD from the HDD without spending more money on a new copy of windows (depending on if it's OEM or full version)

My idea was to, if I bought a SSD, replace the HDD's job in holding the operating system, making the HDD the storage and the SSD the OS drive.

yes but that just gonna give boost in load times like boot and gaming load up time. its not gonna give you any speed in game...

and as far as ram is concerned...8gb ddr3 1600mhz is enough for gaming...it amount of ram also depends on ur usage..if u r kinda person who open 3-4 background apps running while gaming...then ram of greater than 8gb is recommended....

i also suggest using 2 sticks of 4gb ddr3 and not the single 8gb alone as it can affect in some cases(occasionally).

An SSD is much more than just better boot time.
Everything that lives on that drive is faster.

does memory speed also determine boot time speeds?
also, is 8GB dual channel noticibly slower than 8GB single channel?

When recording videos, will this SSD/HDD setup impact my performance more than adding more RAM?

but the type of hdd i.e. hdd blue, green, black, red, purple depends on ur usage...are you planning more gaming and less recording...or more recording and less gaming....or decent gaming and decent recording

decent gaming and decent recording
