Recently bought a Synology DS 920+ and 4 ironwolf 8tb Nas hard drives. Originally was going to use shr or shr2 which is why I bought such large drives because I knew I was going to lose a lot of space, but I'm having some second thoughts. Primary uses for nas would be for nightly backups for the computers in the household, and possibly some storage for sharing and streaming, etc. Basically, wondering if it is worth using a raid system for these uses. I've seen some argue that having redundancy for your backups with a raid system is a good thing but other saying that is not necessary unless have a server in need of 24/7 access. I fully understand that raid is not backup, but what I'm talking about is whether or not a raid setup for my Nas would be of any benefit if I'm using it for backups or primarily. Is there any reason I shouldn't just use jbod type setup? I was thinking of using one drive for each computer I'm backing up and keep multiple backups on that HD since such large drives. I was thinking of using macrium reflect to manage the backups. What are your thoughts?
If I should use Raid, I was thinking of using shr. Would you recommend a different set up?

Thanks

If these are backups then RAID is not recommended. RAID is not a backup strategy. RAID excels for data availability, not data integrity or data protection.

A simple backup and basic streaming, there's no need to go too complex. Never settle for something complicated when something simple will do.
