Hello Tom's Hardware community,

so I was looking into the Dell XPS 15 and I was determined to buy it untill last week when Microsoft showed off the new Dell XPS 15 with infinity display like the XPS 13.

It looks like a really nice laptop but since it's not officially announced yet it so might take a while to come out, at least until after the Windows 10 launch.

I can wait until 29 Juli but I'd like to have a new laptop by the beginning of the new school year in august.

Can anybody give me advice on wether to wait for the new XPS 15 or to just buy the current one because I am really hoping for a better GPU in the next XPS 15.

Also do you guys think it will have the new Intel Skylake CPU?

Kind regards,
Qwizh

It's going to be very close to school beginning again. Boards that support Skylake CPU's look like they will be out in August.

Personally, I would wait for 10 to drop. Lots of new hardware usually follows large OS releases including model refreshes. Dell is also sensitive to new students starting school, so I would expect to see the new XPS 15 release with or right after Windows 10.

Thanks! Do you have any idea what the specs will be like?

I don't have any specs for the new models. Specs usually change with processor releases. For example, DDR4 will be supported.

I would expect an i5 model with a 1TB 7200RPM HDD, and 8GB DDR4 ram. Moving up from there, you get an i7, 16 GB of ram and the same driver. Then one up from there a SSD and a nicer i7.

There is currently no specs available for the new Dell XPS 15 with the infinity display. If it uses the current Broadwell generation Intel CPUs, then it could be available for sale once Windows 10 is released which is July 29th from what I can gather.

If the Dell XPS 15 is going to be using the new yet to be released Skylake generation Intel CPUs, then you will have to wait longer. As far as I can research, laptops using these new Intel CPUs are not expected to begin shipping until September.

Nice! Have you found out anything more yet?

No updates.

At the earliest it will be released on July 29th which is when Windows 10 is released. However, that will mean it has the Broadwell generation Intel CPU.

If it is going to have the Skylake generation Intel CPU, then the earliest release date is sometime in September when Intel officially allows products using Skylake CPUs to available for sale.

Look forward to this laptop!
I only wish it will have 16Gb memory and more plugs than the xps 13. Would be perfect to have 1 Tb SDD as well, but i guess we should wait a little more for that...

But to install my own SSD means to replace the existing one. A good configuration would probably go with a 500gb drive. Although i could reuse it as an external drive, it's would be a little bit of luxury to replace it...

I am eagerly waiting to get my hands on one of these puppies. I noticed the XPS 15 has been pulled out from their website (in AUS at least) so I spoke to a Dell sales person via their web chat. Was told it will be coming out on 15 OCT 2015.. At least I can plan my purchase around this now

Interesting reading, Soorya25 and corroborates the tweet. Hopefully that's accurate and a worldwide release. I posted on the dell forums and the outlook wasn't as good:

"Intel has released two Skylake desktop CPUs but hasn't set a release date for the mobiles. They're at least a few months out - end of year is speculated, or beginning of 2016."

I'm rocking a 1.4GHz core 2 duo toshiba notebook right now - it's getting pretty desperate!
