Hi,
I have just purchased a 12TB Ironwolf, which I shall be using in a caddy to backup a NAS via USB 3.

I have put it in the caddy and run some initial tests with Seatools, which ran OK. I have not formatted it yet.

I started running an error check in HD Tune Pro, but after an hour the temp went over 50c.

Is this to be expected, of does it potentially indicate a problem with the drive? Will I likely have a problem running this drive in this caddy?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

According to the Seagate, operating drive temp should not exceed 60°C while it can stand up to 70°C,

Also, reputable HDD reviews doesn't say a word about it's temperature,

Only review that shows temps, puts it 29°C on idle and 38°C during stress test,

Thanks. I have since put it in an old aluminium caddy that I dug out (no fan and no vent to speak of), and also placed the caddy on a cookie sheet as an extra heat sink.

I'm only getting max of 166MB/s in the new caddy, but the temp maxed at 41c running the error check for an hour, and 38c during several hours of copying (HDD->SATA->USB3->Ironwolf).

So, it looks like it will be OK, I just wondered if it might indicate a problem.

The real test will be using it for the planned purpose of NAS backup, but I won't have the NAS set up for a few days yet.

Thanks for the responses.
