Signing in to Messenger through a non-hotmail account

I have seen people signing in to messenger using non-hotmail accounts, i.e.,
someone@someone.com. Can someone tell a detailed procedure of doing it? I
guess it is about registering on the passport site, but which account to
register is not clear. Can someone elaborate?

Actually all you have to do is register the e-mail address as a .NET Passport. You can do so
here:
http://register.passport.net

Then just sign into Messenger using that e-mail address and password.
