I am trying to play The Sims 1 on a Windows Millennium Edition VM in VMWare, but it won't start. Attached is an image of the error message.
Any help will be appreciated.

You don't need a VM to play the sims 1 it will happily run on any windows.
You just have to do some things manually.

Since you get an directx error I would guess that you don't have the GPU correctly set up in VM or you didn't install directx on the VM.
I have DirectX 7 installed on the VM, which is the version the game asks for. I also have VMWare Tools installed on the VM However, as I am typing this, my VMWare is updating. Let me see if this helps.

Edit: The update didn't help.

So again, I don't think we can solve your problem as this problem isn't solvable. The VM isn't going to use your video card directly for anything and it has to emulate one. And the most it's going to emulate is the bare minimum, which after snooping around on VMWare's forums, it appears you get a basic "SVGA" adapter in Windows 9x/Me guest OSes.

So basically it's not going to emulate hardware accelerated 3D.
