There is a new Radeon X1900 series graphics card waiting in the wings. According to internal documents, ATI is set to release a single-slot Radeon X1900 GT with 36 pixel shaders. The card is in effect, a cut-down version of the Radeon X1900 XTX and is positioned to go toe-to-toe with NVIDIA's popular GeForce 7900 GT in performance and in price

Hmm. I think this new GT at stock wouldn't beat the 7900GT. In order for the card to work, it's going to need a very low price point, as the X1800XT 512 is just a few bucks over $300. However, maybe the X1900 XL will have better luck. 36 shaders and 575/1200 clocks doesn't seem to be good enough in pure numbers.
 
If the extra pipe can be unlocked then even a $325 price would be a killer deal since you'd probably be able to at least hit XT speeds at a $100 discount. Of course cooling would be a factor.

So now they're calling it an X1900GT? Last I heard, it seemed pretty clear that they were calling it "GTO," in line with the 12-"pipe" X800GTO and X1800GTO cards. Gah.

At any rate, I've been watching this, more or less, intently over the past week or so. This could be something that might give the slam to the 7900GT. (and this might be easier with the attention on Oblivion right now, where the X1k series clearly excels) And perhaps with ATi's stance on tweaking, they won't make it impossible to mod into a full-blown 16-TMU/ROP, 48-PSU X1900 card, akin to the X1900XT. Of course, a shame that they're packaging it with what appears to be 1.6ns memory, when 1.4ns memory is clearly cheap enough to ship with mid-range boards like the X1600XT and 7600GT...
 
It seems that ATI is dominating the $200-300 sector. You can choose from the X1800GTO for $230, the X1800XL for $280, and the X1800XT for $300, and now the X1900GT. Meanwhile, nVidia only has the 7600GT for $180 and the 7900GT for $310, both of which are arguably outperformed by their ATI equivilents.

The X1900GT should drive down the GTO's price to below $200, where it will clearly be the better buy over a 7600GT. Anything that lowers the price of performance is good, I think.
 
According to X-Bit Labs there's only going to be 25 000 available worldwide so it's going to be an OEM and system builder only part. There won't be many in the retail channel although I bet Sapphire will be able to get a few and unlock them to GT2 or some odd name.

X-Bit is still calling the RV570 the X1900GTO, but I'm still supporting the X1700XT name that other sites have gone with. In any case, the RV570XT will be the real part targetted in the $300 market. ATI looks to have the X1900XL in the wings if it's ever needed. That'll probably be in the $350 range to prevent overlap with the RV570 and if it follows XL tradition, it'll have full pipelines and be clocked at the same speeds as the GT.

And the XL should also have better memory.... hopefully...
 
Check it, NewEgg just lowered the price on the Sapphire 512 version to $309. And it's not even a weekend sale or anything!

Or for $10 more you can get the "SR," and I still don't know what that means.
