Sky router name change

Hi I was wondering how to change the name of my sky router as it shows on the wireless network from the default SKY and some numbers. It's the new D-link dark coloured one. One of my neighbours has changed his to 'police surveillance' and I wanted to change mine to something more original. Would be grateful for some help. Thanks

There may be a manual for the router on any CD supplied with it by Sky or check out the D-Link site for it -- actually any router manual will tell you how to address the user setup screens via your browser and once in go to wireless settings and change the SSID to one of your own invention.

The only issue is what's the default password into the setup screens -- usually sky on Sky branded routers rather than the default D-Link which is usually just to leave the password blank.

Some Sky routers are "protected" by the splendidly original password "sky". The login is usually "admin".

Hi I found the name, it was on the login screen and changed the password to something more sophisticated than the defaults sky and admin. I thought I was probably behaving like a child wanting to change my router name so I'm now trying to hide it from normal wireless scans. I didn't realise how easy they were to break into Thanks for the replies

It's best not to tip people off that you have Sky as that narrows it down to a few models of router. I wouldn't use the option to hide the SSID as it means neighbours won't know to avoid your channel when setting theirs, it can cause other problems and you're not even immune to being spotted by commonly used wireless utility programs.

To be able to break into your router, someone would have to get past the the wireless security by either knowing the key or putting a cable in and bypassing it.

Neither is easy if you have the proper level of security so if you change anything, change that to a strong mixed upper and lower case alpha and numeric key and keep a note of it outside your computer. For my part, I would change the SSID state to Hidden or Not Broadcast and let the neighbours worry about their channel settings - most people don't anyway.

I once dealt with a case where we suspected someone had called at the front door and noted the security key off the back of the Sky router when the householder's back was turned. Change your key and that can't happen to you either.

Your neighbour obviously thinks he's smart, given his choice of SSID, but he's really only making himself a target.
