Hey everyone. I recently dished out the $60 for Skyrim (don't ask why I didn't torrent it, I'm no thief, but that's not what this is about) and to my dismay, it runs like oblivion does on my PC, like absolute crap. Outside, my FPS is playable, but low. I get about 30-60 (60 only in very open areas) FPS in most areas on high settings. However, in Whiterun, I get a very choppy 20-35 FPS, which is unacceptable for my system. This goes for all of the cities, including one where I average at 15 FPS.

My system:
ATI Radeon 5770 (I have 2 but one is disabled because of negative CFX scaling)
Phenom 2 x6 1055T (not fit for overclocking)
4GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
Corsair GS800 PSU

I have been playing on high settings 8XAA 8XAF with FXAA disabled.

I also have the same kind of issues with oblivion and I get similar FPS in both games.

in the uk the isp's chose to limit upload speeds on there public networks to cut down on piracy which to me is fair enough. coz if they switched to adsl our 10mb lines would be 5up and 5 down... i much prefer the dsl option which is 10 down and 1 up.
even on the maximum 100mbps lines the upload isnt great, i think it tops out at about 5mbps.

I wasn't so much trying to reassure myself, as I was taking issue with the dude who would DARE say that I have slow internet. And then, instead of answering my question, posted his speed as if it is something special (the nerve of that guy to try and best ME)!

I just hate arrogant behavior...

I thought UK had faster internet than the US.

My internet is only average, and I pull 30mbps download. So when you say public networks, that must mean...what? Like, internet speed at the library or McDonald's or something?

I would think the speed you get in your home exceeds what we americans get.

So basically, you made a joke at my expense.

If you remember, I didn't bring up internet speed. Someone else brought it up.

But because I defended it after it was insulted, you see it as seeking attention.

Whatever.

Heres a tip; don't let things like this get to you. Youre too serious

The only thing I hate worse than elitism is wannabe elitism (not implying you).

And I won't tolerate it.

Now, we can all stay humble.

Capiche?

no m8 i mean the joe public net, ie the net that the public can buy for home use/business use...
in the uk thats 100mb max from virgin. you can get a private line that can carry way more but you really need a business to pay for it.

on a related note.
believe it or not 90% of the net is hidden from the ordinary user. there is a lot of stuff thats censored by your browser, which in a way is a good thing as there is some very nasty stuff out there if you know how to look and find it...

Nasty stuff? I am curious now...

Like what? I promise I won't look it up. :ange:

things like people trafficking, drug dealing, kiddy porn and hit men to name a few distasteful subjects... if you know how you can find the nastiest of the nasty, but be aware there are some people who actively hunt down these sites and close them down (anonymous issued a warning and carried through on there promise to take down a kiddy porn host and did so with ease) there are plenty of black hats that dont like this kind of thing and have a similar opinions as white hats when it comes to this kind of content... if they find it they burn it... and more power to em for doing it.

the under web is where hackers and virus makers hang out. yes they have a presence on the web but if you want to contact them directly you have to abandon the upper web structure and trawl its depths.

to be honest any 1 can get on the hidden parts of the web its not that hard, but like i say its uncensored so finding your way can be full of nasty surprises... the first time i went on i ended up on a site for credit card fraud. basically it taught you how to do it... i was just looking for a certain irc (skidrow)... that most browsers block so i gave it a try with firefox and an addon.(i aint gonna say witch but toms has mentioned it in an article)... anyways like i say the underwed is like the old wild west. very little in the way of law enforcement and a lot of illegal stuff going on.. not a place that you want your kids getting accidental access to.

Nobody in this thread is being elitist, you're being sensitive.

Your getting touchy over a comment on your internet speed of all things.

You could do with getting a thicker skin, I don't know how you manage out in the real world being so uptight and thin skinned, but you need to unwind a little.

Have a bit of banter, have a laugh once in a while, that way you will fit in better around here instead of clashing with everybody.

Ever heard the saying "Water off a duck's back"?

You're right - I can be sensitive. It is usually on forums where I cannot speak my full mind (like this one). The moderators lurk as sharks, and I have a chip the size of a boulder on my shoulder.

I do like the saying.

The joking is not what's bothering me. I am cool with joking.

But just knowing that you are attempting to bother me, that bothering me is your goal, now that does bother me. I see it as disrespect.

I would appreciate it if your attempts to bait me would stop.

Dude, regardless of whether it should bother me, is independent from the fact that you think it does - and continue to do so.

That is why I find it disrespectful.

If I thought I was upsetting another person, I would stop.

So, let's just drop it and go back to talking about games and hardware, cool? 😉

RECOMMEND:

The game is getting fixed, but basically your best option when a Medium/Low gaming system is to tweak the game. Nothing magical about it, and there's no use complaining that you can't run on high settings.

Recommendation for Medium/Low:

1) for AMD, run RadeonPro and drag over the main Oblivion exe file

2) set VSYNC to 30FPS (tweaks->Always On(Double VSync) *unless Skyrim can run the game capped to 30FPS as an option which I doubt but haven't bought the game yet. May need to turn VSYNC off in the game for this to work.

3) set resolution to 1600x900 roughly

4) Anti-Aliasing. experiment with quality vs FPS.

5) adjust other quality settings

SUMMARY:
You should be aiming to run this game at a solid 30FPS on a Medium/Low system. By using the RadeonPro tool you can use VSYNC to prevent screen tearing as well as maintain a consistent frame rate.

The rest is about tweaking for balance. If you go too high on Anti-Aliasing you'll sacrifice frame rate, or have to turn down textures.

Some options don't provide as much benefit as others. Again, you need to find that optimum balance.

*If you establish that you can get a solid 30FPS VSYNC (turn everything LOW first just to confirm this), then disable VSYNC while tweaking and adjust your tweaks so you get between 30 and 40FPS (with VSYNC enabled you only know you're higher than the cap but don't know where you're at).

It is an utter shame that I would have to do that with my setup.

Various fixes have been helpful but I still don't get but around 40fps and that is just terrible considering that I get 80+ with Crysis.

I have a mind to never by another console port again, even if it is a top-tier game.

Then there is something wrong with your PC.
