Hey so Im having an issue powering both of my msi gtx 970 gpus. They each require an 8 pin and a 6 pin to power them. From my psu im using 8 pin to 2 6+2 cords to power each of them. When I have one hooked up its fine. When they are both hooked up my psu will click upon powerup and then nothing. Each of the GPUs work fine on their own. Ive ruled out defective gpus and defictive pci ports. Each GPU is hooked up to its own place in the PSU and im using a corsair cs750m. I could really use some help and I cant really find anything online. Thanks!

Solution
If you one day plan to SLI 980 Ti's then get no less than 850 watts. If you one day plan to CF 290X's then get no less than 1,000 watts.

Its a corsair cs750m PSU. It should be more than enough to power them. But I can hear the psu trip when they are both hooked up.

never mind the gold certified but corsair isn't a good brand for PSUs at least for what i can see on how much they drop faulty psus in their line people forgets that quality is important and quality means a lot of things not only that the product in general is good but that you don't get out faulty products to the market too

Ive been reading that this psu stops working after a while. Is there a 850w psu you could recomend that would power both 970s with no problem? under $130?

the cs series is NOT BAD and it is gold certified, and it gives enough power for the 2 cards:

Tier Three
Some Haswell compatible, some not (maybe unconfirmed). Still safe to use and stable, just lower quality components. Some capacitors maybe Japanese, but can include the Taiwanese capacitors. Not really ideal in serious overclocking or super-high load situations, such as a Bitcoin mining rig or a high end gaming system.

sure, there are better out there, but the one he has is a long step up from the vs/cx series which makes you badmouth the corsairs.

http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page447.htm decent reviews for the cs series, 8+ marks and silver+ awards, i call that good any day

the 2 cards need at least 700W of power

Laviniuc Corsair for PSU is bad no denying that its just like the xbox 360 case when it came out it was so bad that most units got bad after a few month/hours/days of playing it and people still bought em just cuz people get something doesnt mean its a good quality product what matters is the quantity of units they drop to the market that are actually good not the ones you get luck with

Well when I got my psu I threw the extra cords somewhere and I havent been able to find them. So I ordered a generic 8 pin to 2 6+2 from newegg. When I have that generic one plugged into my psu my psu makes a popping noise and trips itself. When I have the corsair cord its golden but just when I have the generic cord plugged in. It doesnt matter what gpu I have it hooked into either. I dont really want to order a new psu if i dont have to BUT all the corsair cords are backordered and I cant find them anywhere.

When I called they said they are backordered.. Does it sound like my generic cord is bad or my psu doesnt like it for some reason? Thats all that I can come up with at this point.

The fact that it's triggering one of the PSU's protection circuits should tell you that.

Where did you get the generic cord from?

I know Corsair sells this one, but there's no CS Series listed in the specs:

Thats the one I need but its sold out.. but after reading your comment I went to newegg where I ordered it from. When I ordered it there were no reviews but now there is two.

Review #1
"Pros: None?
Cons: I got this for my 7970, and it the computer wouldn't start up. I figured my power supply wasn't big enough so I bought a new PSU. I Used these cables with the new PSU and it STILL wouldn't start up. So I used the PCI-E connectors that came with the PSU, and surprise surprise it works fine."

Review #2
"pros: none
Cons: Bought this to use for graphics card (GTX 980) the computer wouldn't even turn on with this cable.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy to replace modular cables for your power supply."

I have a new one coming tuesday with positive reviews so hopefully thatll solve it.

the psu is not bad and not defective. it's not the psu at fault, do you even read the thread before replying? he-s using the wrong power connectors causing the psu to power off.

i agree with you, there are evga psu-s that are better, but suggesting to get a new psu in this situation is like saying to get a new car after you got a wrong size wheel fit on it and it doesnt work any more
