read/write speeds on this enclosure are about 24-35 MB/s. 24 MB/s for audio files or lots of small files via programs, etc., and 35 MB/s being video files 1-3 GB in size.

The enclosure is the black aluminum one you find on ebay, it says 3.5 inch external case, sata usb 3.0.

Hard drive is 5900 RPM seagate st-some-numbers I forget which. However, I am getting the same transfer speeds with a 7200 rpm barracuda regardless. IS this a slow enclosure, should I return it?

Those numbers are typical for transfer rates using a USB2 connection system. You say the external enclosure claims to be designed for USB3 connections, which would be much faster. BUT you don't say what type of USB port on your COMPUTER it is plugged into.

I promise I have been using usb 3.0 ports on the tower and mobo, the results stay the same, no ymmv

Can you post a link to where you found / bought this unit? It certainly seems to be performing as a USB2 unit. I'd like to see exactly what claims were made for it.

Also, look closely at the connector on the end of its cord. A USB2 connector has only four metallic strips in its connector. A USB3 connector has those four, plus a second row of five connection points. What is in yours?

Hi there RuinedXJake,

First of all, you will have to make sure that your MOBO actually has USB 3.0 ports. It may be possible that your casing has USB 3.0 ports but the MOBO has not.
If the MOBO supports USB 3.0, then you will have to go to its manufacturer's website and download the latest USB 3.0 drivers.

Hope this will help,

it has the 5 smaller ones in the back, yes. My seagate externals work at full speed. In fact a laptop hdd in a 2.5 in enclosure transfer caps at 30mbps for large files and yet this enclosure doesn't with external power. Also, it killed on of my hard drives. Into the trash it goes.

It's an asrock z97 extreme 4. It comes with 6 usb 3.0 on the mobo and 2 usb 2.0... haha. All drivers have been installed. The external enclosure is just crap it's going in the trash.
