Slow Icon Loading with Removable Drives

I have this weird issue with opening folders that have many files of many types within them. The icons take forever to load and Windows Explorer lags hugely while they do. More specifically, when I open a folder that has a bunch of old downloads in it on my 32gb flash drive, I try to scroll down and as Explorer tries to load the icons for the files there, my cpu accelerates to 100% and the fan spins up like crazy. It can take a good 5-10 seconds just for Explorer to load them and it's really annoying. The exact same thing happens with my 1tb external drive.

I never had this problem with Windows 7 (in fact I've opened the exact same folders in Win7 with no lag). Is there something different about Windows 8's Explorer that could be causing all this ridiculous lag? Maybe something I can fix?

Help would be greatly appreciated! Maybe I'll learn something too. Thanks in advance!

Specs (if they really matter):
Win8 64bit
Acer Aspire AS4820TG-7805
Acer ZQB1 Mobo
1st Gen Core i5 460M
8gb RAM
Generic 1366x768 Monitor
256gb Crucial M4 SSD
Intel HD Graphics 3000 - switchable with - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1gb

Hello mattagii,
Its not issue of ur external drive but i think its issue of your USB port
And also the reading Capacity
However icons always load slowly also on i7 if u use 32GB pendrive

Dont exceeds its reading capcity use USB3.0 for better and fast performance regarding this issue

Regards and Enjoy

Well, at least someone answered haha. Perhaps I should have been more specific though. I have opened the exact same folders using the same laptop back when I had Windows 7 installed on it. Therefore the exact same usb ports were used. I understand that usb 3.0 is faster, but it worked with the same usb 2.0 ports in Windows 7. Thanks though.

i too own a PC with Intel Pentium 4
so you can guess how good is its performance and 2.8 GB ram i too use to experience that same problem

there are two reasons for a slow performance PC
1 you maybe playing games (not chess or pinball)
something like IGI, GTA etc which decrease your pc speed

2 your pc's files maybe are messed (not currupted) but like some of our bedrooms are
all the files are allright but are mixed ...................

you dont have to change to
windows 7 but there are 2 options
if 1st one doesnt work then use the second one

1st go to start menu -- type defragment and then click on settings
you will find only one option saying defragment and optimize your drives
then click on c drive first then click analyze and you will get info in bracket stating percentage fragmented if that is above 10% then click optimize for then do that for the rest of your drives

after that if the speed of perfomance has a change than ITS OK

IF IT DOESNT THAN GO TO CONTROL PANEL and add a user MAKE SURE THE ACCOUNT TYPE IS ADMINISTRATER then copy importand files from c drive downloads from C:\windows\users and what you neeed in a folder in other drive then sign out and sign in from that new account and go to control panel and delete that old account then test your perfomance speed

you can also try that without deleting the first account

tell me if that also doesnt work mattagiii

bye
