So my internet has been terribly slow for the last couple of years and I've had to live with 150kbps download speeds. I am a pc/console gamer and I always get a lot of lag if anyone else uses the internet while I'm playing online. When I download games it takes days and days to download (I'm trying to download battlefield 3 at the moment and it's taking forever). I upgraded my plan from 25gb to 150gb but the speeds are the same slow speeds. I am willing to buy a new modem/router if it will help (mines really old), so if anyone has a solutions to make my internet speed any faster could you please share it with me because I'm paying $80 a month for this shit 🙁

25mb should give you about 2.5mb/s download, so yea 150kb/s is pretty crappy. First, do you have a modem from your ISP, or did you buy your own? Do you have a separate router does your modem double as a router? Have you restarted the modem and router? Are you using WiFi, or are you on Ethernet?

Game performance is more about latency than bandwidth, so it sounds like you are getting dropped packets which could be modem, router, or any cable/link in between.

If you have a separate modem aside from the router, plug the modem directly in to your PC via Ethernet cable and go to Speedtest.net. If your performance is still really low while directly-connected, then it's the modem or any of the cables it's plugged in to. If the...

If you have a separate modem aside from the router, plug the modem directly in to your PC via Ethernet cable and go to Speedtest.net. If your performance is still really low while directly-connected, then it's the modem or any of the cables it's plugged in to. If the performance was greatly improved, then it's the router or the cable between modem and router. Cheapest thing to do at that point is to replace the cables - coax or phone if you have DSL, restart the modem and go back to Speedtest.net. If that still doesn't fix it, then either buy a new modem or call your ISP. They will assess the modem's health and your connection statistics and may have a tech come out to take a look at the cables between the house and the hub, and may even get you a new modem (almost certainly if you're bumping up from 25mb to 150mb internet).

Ultimately, use process of elimination with whatever you have at your disposal, then use ISP support for the rest.

I worked with an older lady with very similar issues. We ended up replacing her modem (she bought her own this time), router (she also had an old one), and laptop (needed one anyway), and internet was still dropping connection. ISP found a bad connector in the cable chain. I realize that you may not be able to buy all new hardware, but it could really be anything.
