Question Slow startup - I've run out of ideas ?

Hey all, long-time lurker searching these threads for tech advice, now I need some more direct help!

I have an incredibly slow Windows 11 bootup: 100-200 seconds on average for a Windows boot, plus 150-300 seconds for desktop. Has been getting steadily worse over the last couple of years and now it's pretty unbearable.

Setup is 3.5 years old, details below:
  • Windows 11 x64
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3500X 6-Core Processor, 3600 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 6 Logical Processor(s), running at 3900 Mhz
  • Baseboard ASUS Prime B550-Plus
  • BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 3607, 22/03/2024
  • RAM 16 GB
  • Available Physical Memory 9.68 GB
  • Available Virtual Memory 25.6 GB
  • Page File Space 17.0 GB
  • C: (boot drive) 1TB SSD 2.5", free space 232.28GB
  • D: 1TB HDD, free space 849.23 GB
Things I have tried that have had no impact:
  • Full virus scans (Kapersky)
  • Turned Fast starup on & off
  • Disabled all startup programmes
  • Made space on and defragmented both hard drives
  • Adjusted paging file size to 1.5x RAM
  • Refreshed Windows installation
  • Upgraded Windows 10 to 11
  • Updated BIOS
  • Double-checked boot priorities
  • Removed and redownloaded drivers for Disk drives, CPU, GPU, Processors
  • Benchmarked CPU and GPU, resulting in similar scores to Geekbench surveys
  • Run SFC scan
  • Reseated RAM

So yeah, I'm all out of ideas. Do I need to rpelace some hardware?
I'm under the impression that Processor, CPU, RAM shouldn't 'wear out', particular over 3.5 years.

Is there something I'm missing?

Physical RAM 16GB but available 10GB. That seems fishy.

In the RUN command box enter msconfig and click OK. In the dialog that opens click the BOOT tab and then select the checkbox labelled Boot Log. Then shutdown and do a cold boot.

When the system has rebooted you'll find a text file in the C:\Windows folder called ntbtlog.txt, copy and paste that entire text file here. It's a log of drivers that were loaded/unloaded at boot time and it may help us identify what's slowing you down.l

Also, does D: drive used to be the boot drive and you did a drive copy to C: drive?

I've double checked the boot order in bios and everything, not trying to boot from anywhere else. D was wiped completely before using it for excess storage.

Show hidden system files. Check Folder View Options, uncheck hide Operating systems files

Check pagefile.sys swapfile.sys and hiberfil.sys and their location and size

Also show drives and partitions using disk management, take a screenshot and post it to imgur.com

So the event viewer is very interesting. Pretty much everything notes "This application took longer than usual to start up, resulting in a performance degradation in the system start-up process"

Kapersky my antivirus appears to be slowing things down, but what about the rest? Should I be worried about 'critical' entries or all these errors?

I think they look ok?

pagefile.sys = 17.82 GB
swapfile.sys = 16.384 MB
hiberfil.sys = 6.674GB

I to have slow boot in windows 11. Takes about 3 minutes to boot and like yourself i cant track it down.

If i boot via safe mode the system boots in less than 20 seconds.

Sorry, I asked you to publish the bootlog and then didn't come back to you. The main thing I can see in those loaded drivers is a whole bunch of Kaspersky drivers - there really are a lot of them!

I don't like, and never recommend, third-party security products, they do often cause random BSODs. In the current climate I certainly wouldn't want a Russian based company having anything to do with security on my PC. My recommendation would be to fully uninstall Kaspersky using their removal tool and stick with Windows Defender and Firewall.

Why do you not like third party Antivirus? I've always though Windows was not great and have always used 3rd-party, Kapersky for a good few years now. In the boot log, the Kapersky launcher is a degradation, but only 6kms.

I'm more concerned about the svchost.exe which is 23kms degradation. Anyone know why it's taking so long?

Windows Firewall and Windows Defender (in Windows 10/11) are really good at what they do and are all most people ever need. They are all I use. The third-party security product vendors spread FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) in order to frighten people in to paying for their products - which you don't need!

In addition, I see a large percentage of the BSODs I debug across many fora that are caused by third-party security tools. They often use undocumented features in Windows to gain the low-level access they need. When Microsoft change these undocumented features (as they are entitled to do, it's their software) the security product breaks, often resulting in a BSOD.

And Kaspersky is Russian, so seriously?

Paying for a third-party security product is thus like paying someone to raise your risk of a BSOD for no real added benefit. The BIGGEST security risk bar none is the end user. No security product can protect you from yourself. Similarly, a wise, educated, and cautious user has no need of complex security products.

The svchost.exe process is a hosting process for modules that exists only as DLLs. These modules canoot start a process so the svchost.exe process is used to host them, that's why you'll often see one svchost.exe process hosting several DLLS providing different features. It's also why you se a whole bunch of instances of svchost.exe.

If svchost.exe is giving you issues then the problem is NOT svchost.exe it's whatever DLL that instance of svchost.exe is hosting. It's most likely that any problems will be caused by third-party DLLs.

If you want to know then download Process Explorer from Microsoft, that will show you what services each instance of svchost.exe is running. Be VERY careful what you do with Process Explorer however, you can easily kill your system with it.

open windows cleanup utility (press start and type disk cleanup)
click on cleanup system files button, confirm UAC, pick your drive, then switch to "more options" tab
then under system restore and shadow copies click on cleanup button
that should speed up your boot time considerably
