Hello,
I have a Sony Vaio laptop. On the left hand side (near the top left corner of the keyboard) there is a small crack. Eventually, this crack got pretty big so when I opened and closed the laptop, there was a little tick noise. Also sometimes when I shifted the adjustment of the laptop monitor it shut down.
I taped the crack so it no doesn't expand every time I open the computer (which seems to have stopped the shut downs), but I was wondering if this was dangerous because it is right above the side air vent. Since the tape is near the CPU side of the laptop, would the tape melt or something because of the heat? Is there anything I can do to seal the crack other than use tape?

Solution

It's impossible to say. You can take some heat readings form the area affected and possibly look up the specifications for the particular tape you are using on the web to determine the likelihood of it being a problem.
You probably have a worn or damaged display hinge on that side. If you're handy with tools you can probably look online to find a repair video and get the part from ebay. If not, take it to a shop. Fix it rather than just patching it up. It won't get better on it's own and the tape will present a continuing problem that at some point may damage the machine as evidenced by the display shutting down previously.
