I'm considering changing for a SSD drive and looking at the Samsung 850 evo's. What i wanted to know is am i better off having a smaller SSD for just my operating system then a separate one for my steam games either keep my HDD or a new SSD or shall i just get a 500GB and put everything onto that?

Solution

since you installing win 10 on the ssd, you need to reinstall all the drivers for all the hardware again for it to work.
Hi Guys, I done exactly that yesterday. Disconnected the old HDD and installed the SSD all fine, re connected the HDD and changed the Boot for the SSD as primary (boots so much quicker). I only use the computer for gaming, no applications so not a lot to re install, only drivers. I still need to re install the gaming applications Steam, Origin and uplay. Steam still works off the HDD no problem.

I think I will re install them onto the SDD and keep the games on the HDD, I just need to figure out where everything installed to so I can create a set destination folder on the HDD for the games on origin, steam and uplay.

Do you think I should get rid of windows on the HDD and if so how? I have an external HDD so I could drag all my games onto that then re format the HDD I guess?

windows on hdd - I would remove it eventually but until you sure you have everything off you need, I would just leave it as is. You should be able to drag all the origin, steam & uplay games libraries onto the external when you ready to do it though.

Nice going on the fresh install! SSDs are quick aren't they!!

Personally i would get rid of windows on that HDD as soon as possible. My opinion is that it is worthwhile to to eliminate as many 'stumbling blocks' as possible for windows ... and having 2 operating systems could easily be a huge stumbling block) ... I would drag everything you want from the HDD onto your external HD (no windows stuff), then reformat that windows HD and then copy all of those files from the external HD back to it. As Colif points out - be sure you have everything you want copied over before formatting!

regarding wiping hdd, what i would do is

unplug PC and then detach ssd from internal power only leaving hdd attached
boot from win 10 installer
on screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install.
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose command prompt
type diskpart and press enter
type list disk and press enter
this shows all drives available, DVD/USB and hdd, make note of hdd number
type Select disk X - where X is the number of the hdd you want to wipe, change X to that number and press enter
once the drive you want to install on is chosen, type Clean
type [exit] and turn off PC
unplug PC and reattach the internal power for ssd, you can now format the hdd using disk management and set up partitons
