Hello
When I try to start my Compaq Laptop i get the follwoing error message since this morning: Boot Device Not Found / Hard Disk (3F0)

With F2 I can go to Hardware Diagnostics and perform a Memory Test and a Hard Drive Check. Memory Test is all ok but the Hard Drive Check fails with following message: Smart Check & Long DST not installed.

I opened the laptop and reseated the hard disk. Problem still there. After reading on the internet it seems that the hard disk needs to be replaced.

That would be ok for me, however I have one big concern and I hope you can help and answer me my question: Is it possible to recover my data on this hard disk? I usually do a backup once a week every saturday or sunday. Unfortunately I didnt do the backup for this week and now I am affraid all my work of the week is gone. What I need to restore are 2 things, 1. my documents & download folders + 2. my bookmarks in firefox. If I bring my laptop to some computer expert should this be possible?

Many thanks for your help :)

Solution
not good

but is the hard drive actually spinning?

if it is you have some chance--try connecting it to a pc as a second drive to see what happens

if its not other than finding a totally identical hard drive pcb and doing a swap which may or may not work as said a data recovery company but will be expensive

Thanks for your 2 feedbacks.

Yes seems the hard drive is spinning when i start the laptop for about 10-15 seconds. after quiet. I will try to use a external hard drive adapter and connect it to my computer.

well at least its spinning so you have some hope

fingers crossed for you connecting it to a pc does the job

and doesnt need to be an external hard drive adapter can also try it on a sata connector inside the pc as a second drive

if you dont have an external to use

Great thanks for the help. I have neither of them, but I will organize a sata connector for tomorrow. Thx again and keep up the good work - fantastic to get such fast help here.
