I just built a new computer a few days ago and it worked fine for the first two days. Day three after turning it on, it was acting very sluggish. I shut it down to restart it and it won't load Windows 7. The message I get is:

SMART Failure Predicted on SATA6G_2 : WDC WD3200AAJS-61B4A0
WARNING: Please back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive.
A failure may be imminent and cause unpredictable fail.
Press F1 to Run SETUP

I pressed F1 and it just takes me to my ASUS BIOS. I also checked to make sure all my cables were plugged into the harddrive and motherboard (which they are). I put a lot of files on the new computer already and I really hope I am able to recover it. Why would my computer be acting this way just three days in? Is there a way to save my harddrive or has it gone bad already? I am new to this dilemma so some help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there SpeedTrainer,

That is really unpleasant. :(
Did you manage to back up the data stored on the drive? In case you've done that, you can just RMA it, as the other guys have already suggested. You can contact the place you got it from or our Support on that: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=HKat2B

I believe you can both short and extended DLG test on the drive (you may need to attach it as a secondary drive to another system though): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=bt81m4

The results will show what is wrong with the drive.

Is the HDD new? If so, ask for an Advanced Replacement RMA, this should, if they do it, sent you the new drive before returning the bad one.

Get the new one and clone to bad one onto the new. You may need to make a backup to yet a different drive first, if the clone fails.

I use ToDo Backup (you can get the Free version for this)

I tried installing the hard drive into another computer and it was detected in My Computer. When I tried to click it or the properties though, I just got an error message. So I just tried to do a clean install to see if it would let me, and it won't. It is stuck at the Setup is starting... screen.

You need to return it. In my experience when a hard drive is going to fail it usually fails almost immediately. It could also have been damaged in shipping. The platters inside the drive are very fragile and shock sensitive.
