Smoke , laptop display stopped working. Laptop still functions normally on external monitor.

I opened it up and can't see or smell anything unusual.

I've found a replacement panel online just wanted to check.

Is there a possibility replacing the panel will not fix this?

If so what would be the issue? Feel free to be technical.

If the external display output works then clearly the display adapter, if your unit has only one display adapter, is still working. I'd check/replace the cable between the motherboard and display first. Often these break or short due to being rubbed/moved back and forth and pinched every time the lid is opened and closed. Otherwise, the panel is likely the cause.
