Well, evidently you managed it.

You actually don't need to send an email IIRC, only receive one. But the vast majority of posts are not about email issues, so the benefits significantly outweigh the costs.

You need to open an email account with an email provider so that when you sign up to a forum, the confirmation email is sent to your email account to which then you click the confirmation notification so that your forum account is activated.

It's much like any sort of forum, even Facebook and Twitter, you need a separate email provider prior to signing up to a forum type site.
