So Frustrated with 4890's Availability

Well hello again all,

I jsut recently ordered all my parts for my new pc build and unknown to me the video card that I selected (one of the new OC 4890's from MSI) wont be available untill the 24th of August, which is holding up my whole order. So I had them cancel the video card. Then today I read where the new DX11 cards may be out on Sep 10th.... So was this fate stepping in and saving me from spend $$$ on a card that in less than a month could drop alot in price??? Who knows... But that leaves me with a question for you all.

Currently I have a 8600 GPU that um well blows BUT I was considering waiting untill the new cards come out and the old ones drop in price since it may be a lil sooner than a month away. Or whoudl I just say to heck with it and order now. lol

For some reason this is the 3rd time I have ordered a 4890 to have issues with availability or after order I get a call saying sorry we are out of that certain model. How would you feel about this? Could it be that a 4890 is not ment to be for me and perhaps Nvidia is calling me. (too bad the green dont look good with my red/black theme rofl

Yes, this is definitely a case of Divine Intercession, God wants you to have a DX11 graphic card for Windows7 and any new games that come out in the future that can use it. Either use your old 8600 card or buy a cheaper "placeholder" card until the new ATI Evergreen (5850/5870/5890) cards are out and benchmarked and you choose which one would be best for you. Get something like a 4850 or 9800GT for a placeholder card, then sell it to a family member or friend that doesn't need top end graphics for a $25 or so loss, they get an improved graphic card at a very low price and you get to wait until the newest card are out and benchmarked so you have the time to pick and choose which one you want.

Honestly, it depends on the games that you play. If you've been using an 8600 then the jump to a 4890 is very massive. Unless there is some game you're expecting to bring every top video card to its knees as of today, the price/performance of the 4890 is still a great deal.

Two other notes on the 5xxx series release:

- Don't expect massive price drops on the 4xxx series. Why? because they've already been dropping the prices for a while now in preparation for 5xxx. That, and the newly released 5xxx cards will be more expensive initially -- several months (as was the case with the 4xxx series)

- The new 5xxx GPU will debut Sept. 10th, doesn't mean that consumers will be able to ge their hands on the new cards that day. Maybe soon after but i doubt it'll be the day of, so its little longer to wait.

The 5870 is calling to you. You must suffer with an 8600GT for now, or get a 4850 to hold you off, and then you will be able to get the DX11 card you need.

Haha thanks for the replies everyone. I thought it just to be kinda weird how when I try to buy the card I keep getting turned down for one reason or another lol.

Sigh my i7 build will just have to be graphics starved for the time being I guess lol. If it werent for the type of 8600 I have maybe it would be so bad but this thing has turbo caching or some junk like that (shared mem) lol.

As for games though.. I have been attempting to ply COD4 and gmaes like that. Wanted to ply farcry, crysis(but I knew better not too) , starcraft (when it comes available... and the list goes on and on.

Consider a GTX275 or 4890 from XFX or EVGA. You will then have the option to apply your purchase price to a new card within 90 days.

Well another turn for the worst lol. Since the card I ordered wont be in for a while and since I went through bing cash back program I now have to cancel my whole order and re order to get the savings lol.

I did not know about xfx having the ability to do the trade up program... And I thought the evga one allowed you to trade up according to the value they set for the price of the old card to the new one purchased. As in they dont care what you paid for it but it depends on the value of the card at the time you want to upgrade. Maybe I was wrong in that hmmm..

Does XFX allow for a trade up? Because that would be great since I just got a 4890 that should arrive on wednesday and I would rather do the 90 day step up type thing if I could than have to debate over returning it or not.

XFX does not have any kind of step up program like evga does. What they do have is their double lifetime warranty. Just an FYI

Very true.

I would favor XFX. Their warranty transfer makes it easier to sell the card whenever you want.

One drawback of the EVGA program is that if you bought the old card at a bargain price on sale, you only get that price to apply to the full retail price of the new card.

Get at least a 4850 now, and wait a few months before you're next upgrade. Really, nothing (except Dirt2) will be out with DX11 support, and NVIDIA will eventually have to jump on the DX11 bandwagon, which will drop prices of ATI DX11 cards.

The 4670 replacement may be 60% faster, or around the 4870 level

Thats a guesstimate by me, somewhat on the hopeful side, but not by much, as the total BW/fillrate is to be 1.77 times that of its replacement

Isnt the 4670 around the perf of the 3870? Maybe Im wrong...
Anyways, its between the 4850 and the 4870, which is rumored perf, on a bungholio that may or may not show actual perf in games vs bungholio marks, but thats the rumors intent, close to the 4870 in perf, and better than the 4850
