I am shopping for a new P4 CPU and I'm a bit confused. Is there any performance difference between the socket-478 and 423 P4? Based of the current pricing, I'm thinking of a 1.8 GHz and is there a Northwood 1.8 GHz?

The Northwood 1.8 is just starting to trickle out (along with the 1.6), so if you see one from a reputable dealer, grab it.

Make sure you get socket 478. Socket 423 is the older version that is now outdated.

I understand that the Northwood CPU has larger 512 KB L2 cache and 0.13 micron technology. How about the Williamette core CPU, is there a performance difference between the 423 and 478 socketed CPUs?

There is no difference between the Willamette 423 and the Willamette 478, except for the packaging (socket they fit in, basically).
