Hello,
I have a Gateway DX4200-09 with AM2+ Phenom II x4 9150e 1.8Ghz 65W. I am wondering if the CPU Phenom II x4 910e 2.6Ghz 65W would work as replacement with same motherboard Rs780 chipset is 780g? Its AM3 and uses 65W just like my current one. Or is there a better AM2+ CPU to use? I found online a thread where one person mentions using the Phenom II x4 840 95W cpu. But then i will need new PSU and I am not sure about BIOS. There was never a BIOS upgrade since PC release late 2008,
Currently PC has Windows 10 Home x64, 8GB PC6400 800Mhz DDR2, 640GB 7200RPM HDD. I know building new PC be better but then I have to buy all components and windows... but if i could just replace CPU and improve performance then that would be cheaper and get to use my machine for several more years.
I have seen on ebay the CPU Phenom II x4 910e 2.6Ghz 65W is more expensive than Phenom II x4 840 95W 3.2Ghz even though the 840 is faster. Then AMD Phenom II X4 830 95W 2.8Ghz for around $20 which is cheaper, and would provide me the performance boost i seek. But those 95W cpus. would require new PSU, and i have no idea what PSU could fit in that mATX box. Also running higher watt cpu might be bad?
