Softquadro is a software driver hack that will enable certain quadro features on a regular gts card.

Has anyone used this and if so does it work?

here's the links:

Dude, it's not only the drivers, u must also alter it physically (really, all a Quadro is is the same video card but w/ SMP resistors the other way). In yahoo search for GeForce to Quadro, and u will see this really great website for it.

I think this tool gives you the same benefits as the hardware hack but on a 'safer' software level.

I did it a few days ago. Works completly fine. I more than doubled the performance in 3d apps. Softquadro modifies the driver to ignore what hardware ID the chip is (that is why you'd have to change it physically before). Game performance doesn't change, 3dmarks tests went down about 100 or so but no big deal. If you like to use 3d apps then go for it! If you use 3dsmax make sure you get the maxtreme v4 drivers, they improve performance in max even more.

maxtreme v4 is at the elsa webpage. I am talking about viewport speeds, actual rendering is done by the cpu.

Isn't there any way that I could render using my GeForce 3- it would be considerably more powerful, and I don't see any point in using the video card for the viewports, since there are often many artifacts, and why is it that it crashes once objects get too complex- shouldn't it just run slowly?

what is your system specs, are you overclocking? That isn't normal.

"Windows 98SE"
thats your problem. If your serious about 3dsmax then you need to run Windows NT or win2k, or you'll have things like that happen to you all the time.

nope, max is for only windows. Your systems won't perform slower, just in directx you'll get scores a little lower.

Because Nvidia's drivers for win2k don't perform as well as they do in windows 98/ME. This is true for Ati as well.

Will 3DSMAX R3 render faster under Win2k? And you are absolutely serious that Max will never crash when a scene gets too complex, right?

I didn't have very good luck with this. I modified a set of 12.41 drivers with the tool, and then a set of 12.60 drivers, and found no option for the QuadroDCC.

Later, I downloaded another set of 12.60 drivers from M3DZone that had been modified by Joerg Battermann. These worked, and the QuadroDCC option was listed. However, afterwards, I saw absolutely no change in the nVidia Control Panel. I had assumed that I would see several new options available. Did I just make an ass out of myself? LOL!

I ran a benchmark with 3DMark2001 after that, and my performance had dropped nearly 2000 3DMarks.

In order to get back up to speed, I had to do a very thorough job of cleaning in order to get the unmodified 12.41 reference drivers back in. Windows kept popping up a message at the boot that the drivers were invalid because they were for a previous version of Windows ... and so they were automatically disabled. Which was kinda strange.

The second time I cleaned them out, and reinstalled the card, they went in without a hitch. So ... it wasn't really a problem, as such, but it was odd.

My benchmarks scores are now back to the previous level.

Okay ... it's obvious that I did something wrong ... but I have no idea what. Care to fill me in, please?

An odd side benefit of this is that I had been having some difficulty troubleshooting a problem with the wheel on my Logitech mouse, (it refused to scroll when in the browser, but functioned normally, otherwise) ... and with the fresh installation of the video card drivers, the wheel suddenly started working again.

Ain't life strange? What would we all do without Windows to keep us on our toes? ;-0

Yes ... I'm replying to myself ... it's been one of those days.

Further questions. Should I have attempted to modify one of the Elsa drivers, like the Gloria III, or the Maxtreme, instead of a standard reference driver?

And if so (and assuming that it worked) ... what kind of software would I need to take full advantage of the card's capabilities, afterwards?

Last dumb question for the day. I was under the impression that thi was primarily for OpenGL. Why would it have affected the performance of a benchmarking program like 3D Mark2001, which is DirectX?

Oh, and in case you wondered ... I did clean installations of all drivers, each time. I looked in vain for the unified back buffer ... but it wasn't there.

Oh, what the hell. Here's another one. What's Mirai? Is it some kind of polygon-rendering editing program, or something to do with Auto-CAD? I'm ignorant as the devil about stuff like this.

Thanks in advance ... Toejam31

3D Studio Max (will cost you quite a bit though), Bryce 3D, any 3D animation program/ CAD program, stuff like that.
