I have an older Dell Poweredge tower with built in raid support but it could only see up to 750GB of my new 3TB drives. I purchased a PCI RAID controller masscool xwt-rc061 to accomplish this, but I do not get any options at bootup to boot to this addon controller. I started creating a software RAID in ubuntu 13.10 server but thought there must be a better way. I would much rather have the performance benefits of the controller doing the processing on this lower end server, I just don't know how to access it and cannot find any support information. Linux can see the drives just fine plugged into the card so I don't think I need any drivers.

The low end cards all offload parity calculations to the cpu, this is no different then motherbd raid. In addition - its pci and max bandwidth is 133MB/s which a single new drive can saturate so there isn't much point to raid beyond raid1 and for that you are much better off using ubuntu for that.
