I think you'd have to ask the author to be certain but intuitively I believe "marginal" would mean partial or intermittent failure and "solid" means complete failure.

That's what I think too... more common terms for 'solid' being fatal/catastrophic failure which is obviously non-repairable and 'marginal' being either an intermittent failure, random crash, etc. that does not systematically prevent the computer from booting and being usable at least to some extent.
