I recently upgraded my GPU
1080ti -> 3090
The 3090 is powered by a brand new Corsair RM850 PSU but one of the power cables is daisy-chained off of another.
The computer posts, works in the bios completely fine and works in safe mode completely fine.
The first time, it booted into windows and I logged on but shortly after a black screen happened (no cursor, lost keyboard and mouse power and the monitor said no signal) and I had to restart.
After this, it freezes during the log on to windows.
When it freezes, the mouse and keyboard go off.
I will note I did not remove the 1080ti drivers previously and I was running a profile on a gigabyte program for a custom fan curve at start-up.

That post is exactly what mine does (apart from the first time)

The new GPU is the Xtreme model so 3x8pin connectors are required, my (new) PSU only has 2 so as I said one is daisy-chained.

Do I need a new GPU power cable?
Or could it be a driver problem?

Any help appreciated,
Thanks

Solution
Use DDU in safe mode to remove the drivers and then restart into normal mode and reinstall the Nvidia drivers again. Tell me if it changed anything with the behavior of the system after driver reinstall.

First what other hardware? motherboard+cpu+ram.

If it is about a third cable can you get one from Corsiar (or online shops),
https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Accessories-|-Parts/PC-Components/Power-Supplies/Premium-Individually-Sleeved-PCIe-Cables-(Dual-Connector)-Type-4-Gen-4/p/CP-8920250
as long as you only use one 8pin EPS cable (power for cpu). Is a two pack so two pcie cables in that package.

There is also this,
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...-windows-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234
can make windows start in safe mode, in safe mode Nvidia drivers are not used so in case the drivers are to blame try to start into safe mode, download DDU and clean up the Nvidia drivers

I'm guessing "one of the power cables is daisy-chained off of another" is your issue. You likely need three separate 8 (or 6+2) pin cables coming from your PSU to your GPU.

Yes, I think you need another GPU power cable.

I was wondering if that was the issue, but would it cause the freezing even on start up when there is little to no load on the graphics card?

Motherboard is a MSI B550 Tomahawk, worked completely fine, 6 months old
CPU is a 5900x, temps are fine in bios and again has worked completely fine, 6 months old.
RAM is Corsair Vegence PRO SL 2x8GB 3200mhz C16 again worked completely fine, 6 months old.

As said in the post, safe mode seems to work completely fine so hoping that would mean it could be a drive problem. I will try the DDU and get back to you, thanks.

I fixed the issue, my GPU is still daisy-chained until I get a new cable. I put my old graphics card in and ran DDU, and uninstalled the program that would run my old GPU on eco mode at startup (Idk if that could cause some issues) but after that works just fine. At load been pulling close to 400W and so far no crashes. I am blown away by the performance of this card - thanks everyone for the help!
