[SOLVED] Windows 8 install stuck at Preparing

Hi all

I am at the moment trying to upgrade my Laptop to Windows 8. My desktop computer is already upgraded, and the installation finished without any problems at all. But i can't say the same for my Laptop. It installs fine, but when it gets to the device setup, system setup etc. it stops at Preparing (i think it's what it's called, mine is in danish and say "Forbereder") around 25-35%. The percent counter gets stuck and the loading circle stops completely. I have to hold the power button to kill the computer and let it reset itself back to Windows 7. It is a HP Pavilion dv6 6b12eo. Can anyone help me fix this?

Hi Gammarik,

Sounds like Win-8 is choking on a device or device driver. First thing I'd do is download and run the Microsoft Win-8 upgrade assistant.
It will scan your laptop and show you any issues that require correcting for install Win-8 smoothly. Could be a device it doesn't know, or an outdated driver you can get from the manufacturer website, or something else. Could be you will need to uninstall a device, or download the latest driver.

Sounds elementary but you need to upgrade your older Win-7? 32 bit with a 32 bit win-8 program, and a win-7 64 bit with a Win-8 64 bit one. I don't know how the DVD comes or download is for the Upgrades, but for the full version you don't get both bit versions on the DVD, you have to purchase the...

If you for example are try to upgrade a 64 bit laptop with a 32 bit Win-8, that of course won't work, but you can download the 64 bit version from MS and the Product Key you purchased will work for either one.

I brought Windows 8 through the Upgrade assistant, but i am not able to run the compabillity test again. It just shows me what it showed me the first time. I have uninstalled all programs listed there, including ATI Catalyst Control Center and Install manager.. In the top it says that Safe Start is not compatible and i need to install a dvd-player.

As i already said, i brought it through the assistant, so i would assume that it already detected that i am using a 64-bit system. It never prompted me to confirm it..

Dual booting is not necessary (and if not done properly can actually get quite messy). As has already been said above, try checking that you don't have either a failing hard drive, or failing RAM. MemTest86+ is a great diagnostic tool for your RAM.

For the hard drive, things get a bit trickier because many diagnostic tools are manufacturer specific (same goes for Solid State drives if you have one of those). Try to determine which manufacturer made the drive (or drives if you have more than one) in your system and check their website for any diagnostic tools that you can download and use.

I found that my Laptop has Memory test and HDD test build into the BIOS, when looking for the USB boot option, so i ran these and passed both. So it can't be memory/HDD failure...

Built in tools I find are never reliable. This still may very well be a ram or HDD issue. Run MemTest86+ on your ram at the very least.

I just ran the MemTest 86+, and my PC passed again with no errors. I think it has run 6 times now, as i didn't know it was done 😉

I am going to try updating all the drivers from HP, but should i use the Windows 7 or Windows 8 drivers? I am still on Windows 7, so i don't want to screw anything up, but it could be the Windows 7 drivers.

It worked for me. I had two 1gb and one 2gb ram installed & I had no problems accept few times when I had to take both of them off and everything worked fine with just the 2gb ram, but it was long time back and since my system ran fine with all three, I never gave it a thought. I took those two off, restarted the PC, it came to the blue logo (where it got stuck before) and it didn't get stuck. =) Thank you so much for your help. This worked for me and I hope it works for others too.

i tried to install windows 10 on my windows 7 pc it got stuck up at 17% and a message poped up showing windows 10 occured a problem while installing
pls help

Most Windoze installation problems are caused by corrupt Microsoft downloads, inadequate program testing by Microsoft, and ridiculously overcomplicated installation procedures, NOT memory. In fact, if your computer boots into Windoze, you probably DON'T have a memory problem.
Just because you can type doesn't mean your advice has any validity.
