i have had a rig since 2011 and have since upgraded almost all components and upgraded to windows 10 when it came out. replaced Mobo, video card, ram, processor, and have recently had some problems with random BSOD messages. was told it was probably my hard drive and needed a clean install. but i have SO MUCH personalisation into it that i would be very disappointed to start over.

had some issues getting a new SSD and new HDD ready. have the clean OS ready on the SSD and have cloned my HDD to save my files/games/pictures/ect. after some browsing figured that the "control panel, backup and restore (windows 7) would save most of what i want. background setting (that windows 10 wont let me do anymore even through cmd prompt) installed apps, settings, ect.

i noticed it during some other things like when i needed to format the new drives, but when i click the *set up backup with the admin shield it gives me an error "invalid location; cannot save the archive 'sdcit.zip' to the system32 folder. please chose other..... but all it does is open my zip program and wont even let me save anything. the issue happened some other times but i worked around it with cmd prompts and such.

i just want the easiest switch possible. the windows 7 backup seems like it would save me almost all my trouble.

some info that might help, originally had windows 7 that came with the rig, upgraded to windows 10 for free about 6 months after release and it had worked most of the bugs out. now im running everything (boot, files, os) off of the cloned drive. issue happened with original drive too.

A clean install, on either drive, is a blank slate.
And with transferring settings...
1. How do you know that is not part of the problem?
2. You evidently can't do it anyway, because of the actual problem.

Yes, a clean install can be sort of painful. But sometimes, that is what is required.
Leave the old junk and just move on.
just isntalled. but does macrium just save the profile? create image of partition required to backup and restore windows..... then when i start using the SSD to boot from i restore from that image? it wants to image the whole drive.

i was/am currently using my HDD as sole hard drive.

ultimately i want to use the SSD as the boot drive and the new HDD as the file/storage/where stuff is installed drive.

Macrium can create an Image of the entire drive. All partitions.
This would be a file called a_bunch_of_numbers.mrimage.
If needed later, you can use that Image to put back on a whole different drive, recreating the system exactly as it was on the day you create that image.

If you want more detail or other functionality, we can go into some detail for that.
Again...Macrium is my goto application for imaging, cloning, backups....

Yes, you need to fix it before any migration.
Otherwise, you're just moving the problems to a different drive.

i dont want to create a WHOLE image to restore from. the original issue was the OS giving the BSODs all the time. so the clean install was what everything pointed to. if i was to restore from that image it would bring back the same issues. i thought maybe it was my hard drive components were dying (had since 2011 surprisingly) but the cloned drive does mostly the same things.

Then cloning or imaging is NOT the fix you're looking for.
By definition, that is exactly what you have now.

correct. i just want to try to transfer the profile and settings im using. the windows backup and restore (windows 7) from that admin tool (from looking) seemed to be able to backup the settings but not the whole OS. or was i wrong? once i move the boot to the clean install on the SSD i want to be able to use the new HDD as the install destination for programs, files, storage, ect. if i have to reinstall everything and reset all settings it would be annoying. was hoping for a quick transfer.

from what iv read in browsing the control panel, backup and restore (windows 7) does a bit of what im wanting. i guess i would like to try it if anything. im just needing to fix the admin function issue. the same thing happens when i right click the start button and try to open cmd prompt

At any point in this upgrade, did you ever do a clean reinstall of the OS?
If not...that's what I would look to doing.

You've gone from Win 7 or 8.1, to Win 10, and then changed a bunch of parts, including the motherboard.
Lingering issues like this often happen.

Clean install of the OS is what I would do here.

clean install on the same drive would wipe the settings and stuff wouldnt it? i have the clean install on the new SSD but im hoping i can transfer the settings.
