@jupiter optimus maximus: As of April 10, 2012, Windows Vista went from mainstream support to extended support. That means that from that date onward, Vista will only receive security patches and hotfixes for the next 5 years. No more new features/upgrades from now on, including new versions of Office (ie no Office 2013), IE (IE 10+), Service Packs, and of course, DirectX. Windows 7 will have the same fate in January 2015, unless Windows 8 really fails and Microsoft has no choice but to make Win 7 the new XP.

Well they release win9 by then with "cool" aero tiles that allovs "translucent glass design" and everybody things that it is really cool to have it ;-) Mobile platform is so much more important to MS at this moment and in the future that they don't extend the win7 support any longer than 2015 for features and 2020 for security. We just have to hope that the desktop feature is more polished in the next version of Modern (aka Metro) UI.

I think the cry babys who still use windows xp and windows 7 need to move on to future technologys, Windows 8.1 is so full of feature rich content. It just blows my mind how much they have advanced with the 8.1 os, And these advancements deserve to be exclusive for windows 8.1.As for developers, They will and are already working quickly to compliment windows 8.1 with theres software, It will both push windows 7 and xp users to windows 8, And if it doesnt then those that are stuck in the past will be left in the mud with console gaming. The new dx technology is also going to follow GPUS. The Gpu industry, The gaming industry and Microsoft will slowly push everyone into the new market. Its just the way it goes. These companys work together for a reason.
the os platform has practically looked the same since windows 95 up into windows 7.
