I don't know why this is happening but a lot of the icons on the taskbar are blank. For example, sticky notes, Windows settings, calculator, etc. But a lot of icons work like Firefox, Premiere, etc.

It looks like all the apps from Windows store and the pre-installed apps are the ones having the problem.

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. I understand your concern, and we in Community will try to help you in the best possible way.

I suggest that you try the steps below and check if it helps

1. Close and save anything that you are working on before proceeding. The next steps will involve killing explorer and restarting the PC.
2. Open a command prompt. (helps to give it admin rights)
3. Copy and paste each command below one at a time into the command prompt, and press Enter after each command.

ie4uinit.exe -ClearIconCache
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
DEL "%localappdata%\IconCache.db" /A
shutdown /r /f /t 00

The last command will shut down your computer

Hope this information helps

Shhh, I was spying on Colif and ran into this thread. Don't tell him.

I've had the same problem for maybe a year now. For me, it's only on Edge. There's simply no icon for it.

Edge is the last thing (not seen) here. You can see the underline for the icon. I'm using Open Shell which is why I have a custom blue taskbar and start button.

I think the icon is pulled from a special location as it seems that I once was able to change/edit the icon for someone else. However, that information also did not help me because I had the same problem at that time. I'm sure the thread was here on these forums and I might hunt it down later, but it probably won't help.

Here's a few things that I've tried and these did NOT help me. Maybe you'll get lucky and one will help.
None of those helped me. I just wanted to chime in before you start doing all of these things one at a time and say that I doubt if any of these will help... but I hope I'm wrong.

The one thing that I haven't tried is a Windows re-install and I don't think it's worth the trouble for this problem. I have a ton of software installed that I don't want messed up.

Edit: I just did a "Repair Install" by running the Windows Setup once again. I picked the option to keep personal files only (meaning apps would be reset). It took about an hour. This problem survived that reset. I still have a blank icon for Edge.

have you tried making a new local user and see if its the user to blame and not the PC?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-au...-create-a-local-user-or-administrator-account

if that works, log back into normal user again, go back into account set up and make the new user an admin.
copy the contents of c:/users/old username onto new user name folder in c/users folder
log into new user and have all the access you had before. No need to reinstall anything.
then all you need to do is set up browsers and maybe log into onedrive/steam if you used them before.

it takes about 10 minutes, I had to create a new user before when my current one stopped logging in correctly.
