Hello group,

I've been playing Diablo 2 / LOD for about 3 years now, on and off, but
I only recently found out about these two newsgroups. There're several
things that I just can't quite figure out myself and hope I can find
the answers here. I crosspost my questions because I think the answers
will benefit others as well. Here we are:

1. What type of damage is inflicted by Paladin's Blessed Hammer? I
have always thought it was Magic, but it doesn't look like it since I
could kill Achmel easily. It isn't Physical either, and definitely not
the other elemental.

2. Is there a reason why Concentration aura increases B. Hammer's
damage but not Fanaticism? From reading the descriptions at the skill
tree, it seems to me that both Concentration and Fanaticism are
supposed to increase Physical damage. What's more confusing to me is
that B. Hammer doesn't seem to be Physical.

3. Does Concentration also increases Necromancer's bone spells (Spear
and Spirit)?

4. What main curse should I use for my standard BoneMancer? Does Lower
Resist make the monsters take extra damage from the bone spells? I've
been using Decrepify to slow them down. I do have just enough skill
points saved to get Lower Resist immediately once I have confirmation
that it will help.

5. Does Lower Resist help Blessed Hammer?

6. Does Conviction help either Blessed Hammer or Bone Spells?

7. Is it a good idea to use Slow Missile (Amazon) when facing Black
Souls? I read in the archive that Souls lightning attack is a large
amount of small damage as opposed to a one time lump sum damage.

8. Does TP'ing always make Baal's clone go away? I read that
somewhere, yet I recalled an occasion where his clone just didn't go
even after I went back and forth thru TP several times.

9. I think I have a glitch in my copy of LOD. I asked around and none
else seemed to have this problem. The last Ancient who died always
have a "100% Chance to Cast Level 99 Magnet on Death" skill. That is
if I just stand there, for example when I use a sorceress and just cast
a timered spell, as the last Ancient vaporized, he always pulled my
sorceress toward the mist where last stood. It's a big problem when he
is Fire Enchanted. Therefore I always make sure I disposed of the Fire
Enchanted kinds before the last.

"Philosophical" questions:
1. Does anyone else think B. Hammer is just too overpowered? My
Paladin can solo an 8 player game easily. Especially with that Insight
runeword on his merc, it is impossible to run his mana out.

2. Ditto Infinity runeword. I was just recently able to complete this
runeword. The Conviction aura and -55% Monster Lightning Resistance
make all monsters lose their lightning immunity, except the Skeleton
Mages in World Stone Keep 3. TrapSin just rip through everything even
with one arm tied behind her back.

3. What do you do after you kill Baal in Hell? I only keep ones who
can MF or rush others, and strip & delete the others.

Ive heard that its a bad thing to use slow missile because
it will take longer for the bolt to go through you and therefore
do more damage.

It's magic, but it ignores the immunities of undead and demons. If you
want to find an enemy immune to it, search the small temples in Act III.

Lower resist does increase dmg of bone spirit and spear and I would
assume teeth also

Sorry, but you are wrong. It did in 09, but in 1.10, Lower Resist DOES NOT
HELP BONE SPELLS IN ANY WAY. Next time, please check your facts before
answering questions.

It is magic. It also ignores the immunities of demons and undead(Achmel is
undead).

Originally it was a bug, and NO aura was supposed to boost it. Then, in an
older patch, a bug it made it so Might, Fana, AND Conc boosted it. Then they
decided to tone it down in a later patch so that only Conc boosted it, and
only at 50%.

No.

If you're pure bone, it doesn't really matter. Amp or Decrep will help your
merc, Attract or Terror could be used to help keep heat off you or the merc.

Lower Resist doesn't do jack to help bone spells. It used to, but that was
changed in 1.10 so LR is worthless for a pure bonemancer now, unless you
plan on teaming with a lot of sorcs.

No.

No, Conviction only helps attacks that do Fire, Lightning, or Cold damage.
Lower Resist is the same way, but it also helps attacks that do Poison
damage.

No, it's not a good idea. It means essentially that their bolts will stay on
screen for a longer period of time and you'll take damage every time you
move through them.

No, it doesn't make him go away.

Yes, it's overpowered.

Well, except Infinity requires 4 high runes to make, whereas Hammerdin can
pretty much solo with gear that can be found in normal.

Well, that's what you do with them-use them to MF or rush with, use them as
PvP characters, try and level them as high as you can, whatever you prefer
really. I NEVER delete any of my real characters, some I use for
rushing/helping other players, some for dueling, some I just use as mules.
See, the nice thing about a lvl 80+ mule is that they can not only hold
items in stash and inventory, they can actually have a piece of gear
"stored" in each of their own equipment slots. A lvl 1 mule can't wear any
armor or anything, and basically only has his stash/inventory to hold items.
Whereas a lvl 80 melee character mule can store a Leviathan, a shako, 2
unique/rare rings, a Highlord's Wrath, 2 Stormshields, a Nord's Tenderizer,
and a Death Cleaver without using a single slot of stash or inventory space.
And if he has a lvl 80 act 2 merc for example, the merc can then be used to
store say, a Shaftstop, an eth Obediance polearm, and a Vamp Gaze, AGAIN
without taking up any space in the mule's stash/inventory. Plus, the
character is already burned in, so you don't have to spend the 2 hours
burning in a new mule.

to making a Hammerdin will explain it in much more detail than I can. Just
google for some build-guides.

Not always, but it does help. And if you're not too powerful a char, it's
a good plan to leave the Throne Room when the clone is around... ;)

It's very powerful, but it's also very expensive. I've never tried it, but
I am planning to, just to see what difference it makes...

Perhaps MF-ing? Countess-running? Baal-runs to get those extra levels?

But game-wise, there's nothing more to do, indeed.

Is this an LoD thing? I seem to remember making a Hammers Paladin in
Classic using Fanat and it worked just fine.

The only reason I can think of NOT to do it is that its an extra
point, and the IAS feature would be wasted.

Like I said, I'm not sure, but at some point in time none of the auras,
except Concentration, added damage to the hammers, and even that is
actually more like a 'bug' than something planned. Why would a
melee/physical damage aura add anything to 'ethereal hammers' which you
spam? It doesn't really make sense in the D2-universe.

I could expect something like Vengeance to add anything, but then, that's
another primary attack skill. ;)

That's what I mentioned the Baal-runs for, but even with those, Level 99
will take you a loooooooooooong time. :)

Look for a magic immune "animal" (crusher beast I believe) in hell.

Dim Vision: it lets YOU decide the pace and direction of the battle
because everything but boss/champion/possessed/fanatic are blind.

Confusion: they're so busy with each other the heat is off YOU, and
attracts monsters from far & wide so they're within range of your Copse
Explosion.

Amp Damage or Lower Resists to increase the impact of the Corpse
Explosion (not really necessary).

It's magic, but because it's a "hammer," it damages undead (mace class
weapons do +50% damage to undead), and because it's "blessed" it
damages demons, too. The only monsters it can't hurt are magic-immune
animals (anything not identified as demon or undead), which only occur
in Hell difficulty, as wookie-type monsters in the Kurast temples.

Blizzard might have a reason, but probably not.

Because he will usually want to protect himself while herding monsters
together for CE, Dim Vision, Attract, Confuse and Terror can all be
useful. I have found Terror followed by Attract quite effective.

It can be dangerous, as if you don't get out of the way, it keeps
damaging you longer.

I have no idea what that is all about.

But at least Infinity is very costly. IMO there are other rune words
that are more overpowered, like Insight and Spirit.

Thank you all for the explanation regarding B. Hammer and Bone Spells.
I found that odd that Concentration boosts B. Hammer, which is Magic,
but not Bone Spells, which are also Magic. It makes sense that it
started out as a bug, they should have fixed that so B. Hammer is no
longer overpowered.

This is even more puzzling to me, no one else seems to have this
problem. Would any of you try it with your stationary characters, for
example TrapAssassin, timered Sorceress, elemental Druid. Don't click
anything as the last of the Ancients dies. Assassin is perhaps the
best character to try this with. When the last Ancient is down to the
last sliver of life, recast your 5 Traps and stand idle (let Shadow and
Merc engage him).

What always happens to me is as the last Ancient dies, my character
always automatically moves to the location where he dies, no matter how
far I stand from him. Only after my character reaches the
aforementioned location will I get the text and the speech. So, if I
stand in a distance that I am sure won't be affected by the explosion
(in case of Fire Enchanted), but close enough that my character will
move there in time, I could still get killed by the explosion. Yes, if
you notice, there's a short delay between monster death and the corpse
explosion animations.

They did fix it so BH wasn't overpowered. Then they changed it again in 1.10
and made it overpowered again.
