Something poped, computer shuts off, does not turn on

Hi,

On my homebuilt PC, I was rendering a video (not that big, it was moving right along) when I hear something pop, and my computer shuts off, and won't turn back on. The green light on my motherboard will not turn on either. I really hope its the PSU and not the motherboard or CPU or anything like that. Is there anything I can do to check anything? I don't have much money to spend, and I dont have any other computers to try anything with. I already glanced over what I could to make sure things were connected, and I tried to change the power cord, with no luck. I am at a total loss here if this thing is through. In the meantime, I try to backup what I can to my mothers old PC. Any help is much apreciated.

PSU: EVGA 500w
CPU: Intel i5 560
mobo: ASUS P7H55-M

Did you inspect the motherboard for any damage? Burn marks or anything? Without seeing it for myself I would assume the psu failed, that is a cheap low quality psu so I wouldn't rule out that it might have taken something like the motherboard out with it, hopefully not. Only way to know for sure is to try another power supply and see if it powers up.

Hi OP,

Iam not entirely sure but i think your PSU might be the culprit (Cross your fingers).

You can check if the PSU is culprit by following the guide i linked below

http://www.howtogeek.com/172933/how-can-i-test-my-computers-power-supply/

if the above guide sound a little risky or complex you can try a spare or borrow a PSU from your friend to pinpoint the actual problem.

Don't use a pin or try to open your PSU. It's dangerous and maybe the trick works but it's not worth it.

Just borrow a known to be good PSU and put ATX24 and the CPU power on to the mobo. and see if the green light works.

Thanks everyone.

I do believe it is the PSU. No burn marks, nothing like that. I'm praying its the culprit, as many suggested. I was just in contact with EVGA and am getting a replacement, so hopefully that settles it. It might be a day or two before I get it. Unfortunatly I do not have another PSU I can use, so I am at a loss until it gets here.

Thanks again for your fast responses. I hope this goes well.

So I got my replacement today. I think the PSU took out the Mobo.

I plugged everything in a few times and only once the power light turned on, and then went away. So I'm assuming the mobo died along with it. Is there anything else to try?

Huh.

Well unfortunately it's not the Power supply, or at least not the power supply by itself cause your new power supply won't work either (but it did one time, as you said).

Did you by any chance drop water/something metal/shake your computer case while rendering? Overclock?

edit: what is your brand/model/wattage of your new replacement power supply?

Nothing. It just sat there like it always does. My replacement is an EVGA 500w. I'm not entirely sure what the model number is, it should be something like 100-W1-0500.

At this point you may need to start breadboarding

take out everything out of the computer case. disconnect everything, and I mean everything.

Plug in the PSU to wall slot.

put the PSU switch from 1 to 0 (on to off).

Now connect the 24 pin PSU connector. Connect the 8 pin CPU connector.

Now put the PSU s witch from 0 to 1 (off to on)

Does the Mobo light up?

If so, turn off PSU switch and add memory.

and rinse and repeat with other stuff (gpu, hard drive, fans, etc)
