I accidentally deleted the Windows partition on my Vaio. I have recovered the partition using Linux but it still won't boot into windows. The partition is now labelled Filesystem, will renaming this allow the system to boot and if so what should I rename it to? The BIOS is very limited as to what can be changed so I can't check to see if the partition has the correct letter assignment C:, any help on this would be appreciated too.

Thanks.

OK. So it's three days later. What I have now; I found my Vaio recovery discs (CDs), booting off the first one gave me the option to repair the Vista installation. I chose this option and it eventually reported that the installation was repaired and would reboot. The reboot subsequently failed again, same thing - VAIO BIOS splash screen then blinking cursor in the top left corner. Having read a fair few forums on the subject, most of which suggested the full recovery which deletes everything (the very thing I'm looking to avoid), I came across a suggestion for a HirensBootCD. This is a CD full of utilities, one utility allows you to choose which disk and partition to boot from. I choose Disk 1 Partition 2 and hey presto! my Vista booted as if nothing was amiss. At the moment this is the only way I can boot into Vista on my Vaio but it does at least prove that the Vista installtion works! Now, if only I could tell the BIOS that that is where I'd like to boot from.....

Getting Windows back after deletion is a major victory. Count your blessings. It sounds like the MBR on your old boot partition is corrupted, and Windows just waits trying to boot from it. There are Recovery solutions that promise to work, maybe like your HirensBootCD, maybe that will restore the corrupted MBR, but I have not used them. I'm skeptical.

If I were you I would immediately back up my data on DVD or flash drive. The reason is I suspect you will have major difficulty getting this to boot as before. You can live with the BootCD bandaid, or you can do a re-install and have a clean system. Having played with Windows since Windows 3.1, I always prefer to start clean.
