interesting you would rather buy a $300.00 console to run a crippled version of Linux where you could just get a net book for less money and use a better version of Linux.

That's what I did. I got a Dell mini notebook with an atom n270, 1GB ram and a 160GB 5400 rpm hd for $300. It came with ubuntu 8. I reinstalled it with ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix. It's a way better distro than ydl 6.2 and the little dell runs rings around the ps3. I could hook it up to the tv if I wanted to but haven't yet. Actually I think the 10" screen on my lap is more readable than the 65" plasma across the room.

The dell doesn't have a fan and still runs cool. I can set it down anywhere and not worry about it overheating or sucking lint into itself.

I think it was kind of a fun to run linux on a game console, but the ps3 was never really that good at it.

I had the ps3 set up to use vram for primary swap. I think ram wasn't the problem because what swap space that was in use was always in vram. I think the problem was the slow hd (which I could have upgraded I guess), but mainly I think it was lack of any basic 2D graphics acceleration plus I really think the cell is a terrible general purpose cpu. The atom at 1.6GHz seems to do cpu bound stuff way faster than the 3.2 GHz cell's ppe did.

I think if you just want a computer hooked up to your tv, then the one made by Zotac that has an atom x330 (dual core) plus nvidia ion graphics would be even better. It comes with 2GB ram and a 160 GB hd and builtin hdmi and wifi.

First off for those who say your gonna sue sony, Good luck on getting a lawyer good enough with the money most average gamers make. You dont think sony has million dollar lawyers? As for the removal of linux, not enough people care and if you do go buy a pc. The addition of linux to the ps3 was a feature not the main idea of the system. Second of all if you actually bought linux thats your own fault. For all that know about yellow dog know that its a freeware linux made especially for the ps3 so you trying to sue them for freeware is rediculous. I thought it was a cool idea but if it was ment to be on there permentaly then it would come with the ps3. Its like someone trying to sue microsoft because the porn they watched screwed there pc up. As for them charging for online play is doubtfull. Sony knows that this is a big selling feature for the ps3 over the 360. Personally the day i gotta pay for online psn is the day my ps3 becomes a boat anchor. And im not alone on this issue. If your with me like my comment.

More environmentally friendly, more profit, more mass production, more countries will ban it due to that reason, just like blackberry. Keep it real sony, the OS was a good deed. Now its softer work for the GPU and legal hackers. You save this, another happens. 50-50, good decision on removing the OS, and bad decision on removing the OS.
