Sound Cards in Dells

We get the Dell flyers periodically inserted into our newspaper.
Naturally, I scan them, dreaming along the lines of 'gee...wish I had the
$$ to get a new..say...8300'. Anyway, let's take the 8300 for example. It
notes in the description that many have, say, the Radion 9800, or
something equally good for video. Great. But it never seems to say anymore
what they have in them for a sound card. What's up with this? What DOES an
8300, for example, come with for sound these days, as a rule?

if you enter the 'small business' site from the main page, then choose
'dimension' you will find much more detailed product speifications than what

When I bought my 4600 about 1 year ago they came with a bottom-of-the-line
integrated Soundblaster Live. Now the SBLive is a fine card but I do a lot
of recording and integrated cards (those build directly on the motherboard)
can cause problems so I opted for the add-on SBLive (I use a pro card too
but like the SB for soundfonts and gaming, etc.). I got it only to find out
it's not a "true" SBLive. It's a even more stripped down version (if you can
believe that...) of the lowest end SBLive Value. It will NOT use soundfonts.
It has one set embedded but you can't change it. This can be a HUGE deal to
some people. They refunded my money for the card (which was only like $20 -
I don't see how it could even be cost effective to go to the trouble of
making an OEM version of an already bare bones card that costs practically
nothing to begin with). A lot of people made a fuss. Some got refunds, some
didn't.

going with a non-dell card will work just fine but you give up the use of
the front panel headphone jack.
