Sound for laptop and monitor .

I have a monitor and a laptop and i am connecting the laptop with a HDMI cable .I am able to get the sound from monitor and the laptop but what i am trying to do i am trying to control the sound of the laptop and the monitor seperately ,Such as when i am increasing\Decreasing the volume of monitor ,it doesnot increase/Decrease the volume of the laptop . I was able to get the sound earlier in this manner there might be some kind of setting change due to which this is happening.
Please give me the solution to this .

I wasn't aware you can use the built-in speakers and send the sound to a monitor simultaneously.

I would imagine you could if your motherboard allows it. I know with the Gigabyte Gaming 1 board, you can control two different sound devices at a time. Also some software has the ability to input sound in different locations. I was in a virtual meeting, and the sounds came from the speaker, but I had one ear plug in my ear playing music. So, it depends on the software.
