Sound Gets Quiter and Louder

Over the last few days I've noticed that the sound on my PC keeps getting quieter and louder. I thought it was my imagination at first. It's like someone's messing with the voume control.

I've got a set of 5.1 speakers and a Creative X-FI Xtreme Gamer card. I've not changed any settings, done any updates or anything else that may have caused a change.

I updated the drivers today to see if that would have an effect but it hasn't.

Does anyone have any advice on this issue?

Thanks

Nope, never has been. That was one of the things I checked first.

Have you isolated where the sound is problematic, any difference in the audio out of the sb'r (analogue/digital/coax)?

What is driving your speakers?

It's a pretty hard problem to isolate. It happens randomly and infrequently, but obviously there's something not quite right. I've noticed it happening mostly on World of Warcraft or when using Ventrilo, both together and in isolation. But that's probably because I've been using those the most lately, rather than the issue being residing with those. I'll try some other software over the next few days.

These are the speakers I'm using:

Apologises if the link is inappropriate but it's the best I could find. The speakers are quite a few years old, but are as good as the day I bought them, and have not been problematic at all in that time.

If you have THX TruStudio than none of this advice about choosing "disable sound effects" will work.

I tried a million things but finally took a chance and disabled THX TruStudio. and wow, now my sound is rock steady.

I've had this problem with the sound getting louder and quieter since I got my computer years ago-it came with nice Creative Sound speakers and THX TruStudio, so I always figured it was my computer settings causing the problem. Then when I got a new computer but kept the same speakers and installed THX TruStudio (that came with the speakers) I continued to have the problem with the sound getting louder and quieter on its own.

I thought I needed THX Trustudio to take full advantage of my Creative speakers, but now I know I don't need it and it was the cause of the problem all along-and yes, over the years I did adjust every setting of THX with nothing helping.

You cannot imagine the thrill I got when I disabled the THX and got smooth sound that I control all by myself.

I have the same problem on my Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio and Creative 5.1 speakers.

I've managed to observe the Windows' audio slider during the volume fluctuation - it did not change, but the volume indicator (the color bar) was jumping higher and lover according to the volume I was hearing.

Also, it seems there are only two volume states - loud and quiet (though I might be mistaken about that), and it quickly jumps between them (it isn't smooth transition). Most of the time it keeps still at one level, and sometimes it would change around a little and then stop at a random level.

It happens during gaming (many different games), watching a movie or listening to music. I don't know what can cause it, seems totally random. It started couple of months ago, maybe longer (I too thought I was imagining things at first).
