My 98SE seems to play sounds/songs okay apart from those in the sound
property box in which is says that each sound file is damaged and needs to
replaced. Please advise my how I do this. Bob

Do you have you Windows 98 CD, or the setup .cab files on the hard drive?
If so, try this:
Click Start> Settings> Control Panel> Add\Remove Programs> Windows Setup tab.
Double-click "Multimedia" in the list of components.
Uncheck Multimedia Sound Schemes, and Sample Sounds.
Click OK, then click Apply.
Then go back and add a checkmark back to those two boxes, to reinstall them, then
click OK, then Apply.
Insert the Windows CD when prompted, or direct the installer to the .cab file
location on your hard drive.
