What exactly are the advantages to adding a soundcard to my system? I have a decent motherboard and processor, and will primarly be using a usb headset. Would there better quality if I got a sound card and dropped the usb headset? Or are they pointless with a better motherboard

depends on the sound card and the speaker system and the headphones ..

some sound cards are waaay better , but they need $1000 worth speakers quality :)

in other world , dont bother about sound cards if you dont pay much on speakers and headphone ($500 head phone and $1000 speakers)

some motherboards add good sound chips and good amplifier. and most importantly they shield the sound chip ...

so your question has yes and no answer ...

sound cards are better , but only if you are rich enough to take advantage of them.

and yes it is like 100 times better sound quality,

Signal-to-Noise Ratio of 124dB

A signal to noise ratio or SNR of 124dB means your audio will be more than 99.99% pristine, which is over 89.1 times better than motherboard audio.

remember , each 3dB SNR more means DOUBLE the sound quality.
