It is really hard to develop on Source, at least it was then it came out. I remember trying various Source games developed not by Valve and they all looked horrendous! Source relies really really heavy on the textures, not on polygon count or extreme shaders. Hence very performance efficient, but looks as good as artist can draw 3D looking textures without having high poly models to stick them on. I stress this was then HL2 and HL2:EP1 came out.Yeah, I have no idea how in the world the Source engine is as good as it is, it blows me away.
