SP2 will kill MS fax service

I installed SP2 and then couldn't get the fax service to work anymore. I
would get a message "all fax printers are inaccessible". I rebooted the
computer and opened the fax console and up popped a message that XP was
blocking some of the functioning of that program. I clicked the "unblock"
button and now everything is fine.

Never been reported so far, but anything's possible. New patches always have
many unresolved bugs.
Did you enable the Firewall that came with SP2?

I fixed it by changing the Service from Automatic to Manual. This is my
previous post on the subject:

I am having the same problem. The install does, in fact, set the
service to Automatic start. But since fax works when it is first
installed, before the reboot, I expect that there is a conflict with
another program which is also starting at the same time. (There are
many.) Also, the original complaint stated that fax worked after
killing the hung service and restarting manually.

This led me to try setting the Fax service to manual start. I am
pleased to report that the results so far have been good. The Fax
service is started as it is needed when ever a request to send a fax is
made or the the fax console is displayed. There is no need use a
separate command or action to start it.

Interesting. Good to know. Most of these issues appear to be idiosyncratic
and related to firewall issues. What was your firewall status and how did
you configure XPSP2's firewall?

I'm not sure setting to Manual will be a good workaround for those who want
to enable automatic reception. We need to get the complete, detailed steps
to repro so Microsoft can confirm this problem in house.

That's correct but this can be solved by starting the fax service any
time after all of the rest of the system is finished initializing. I
believe that there are ways of doing this automatically, However I
don't know of any specific one.

It will be nice to see if we can get any repros on this.
Did you confirm that the problem was not with SP2's firewall?
