space bar only when fn key used

Solution
I found it! The March 2017 security bundle turned off the keyboard. Go to Programs/TOSHIBA/Utilities. Open HWSETUP and select Keyboard tab. Enable Wake Up On Keyboard. This is only for built in keyboards. reset to make it take effect.

Hi Maggie,

I have the same problem. Are you using Windows 10? I am and I can't find the HWSETUP. Any ideas?

My wife and I both have the Toshiba Satellite L775D and ended up with the same problem March 16, 2017. It is caused by a Microsoft Update. I went to the Control Panel, Programs and removed the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver. After a reboot, the problem is gone. It may come back if the driver gets reloaded. I think I disabled the auto updates. At least you will know where the issue is.

I did all this but dont see Reset?DAMN Microsoft and why haven't they helped us. Class action Lawsuit people.

Same issue. Spacebar only works when pressing FN key. I'm stuck. Can't do business like this. Tons of people are stuck. Who wants to sue Microsoft?? They have locked up our laptops.

just wanted to say thanks,,this worked for my L770

Mattie_9...thanks.for.this.I.got.close.But.my.Toshiba.Satellite.C675.lacks.the.Keyboard.Tab....Grrrrr.Other.tabs.yes,but.no.Keyboard.Looking.for.where.to"Enable....Keyboard"now?

Well, that's 2 hours of my life that I'll never get back! Thanks to everyone for posting - I had no idea what was happening with the space key, so that was a huge relief to find the solution. One follow up - uninstalling the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver worked, but when I next rebooted it was back and had just reinstalled itself. The space key problem was back too! I went into Device Manager, and rolled the driver back to the previous version. That seems to have solved it - hopefully permanently.

the keyboard wake up did not work for me ,,it was uninstalling the synaptics pointing device update,,posted by Domuz Avicisi..had to look hard for the update, but after uninstalling ,space bar is back to normal

After wrestling with this issue for a few days and trying various fixes, including the ones suggested here, i decided to download the synamptics pointing device driver before uninstalling it as i don't like to simply delete something without being able to reinstall it if needs be and found a more recent update here
http://www.synaptics.com/resources
The top link Windows 10 PS/2 & SMBus Devices V19.0.19.1

My keyboard and track pad now work fine after installing the newer version.

I used Maggie_9 solution last Friday to fix it then the problem came back today. I installed the updated driver and it corrected it again, hope this holds. The only update that came in today was a synaptics upgrade for a Lenova pointing device, not sure why it installed on my Toshiba, so now I am trying to figure out how to shut off the auto updates. AARP needs to start computer classes:)

Awesome this worked, so much wasted time on the chat service with Microsoft technicians!
Hope this fix holds (like mlsmiley said), also yeah I would love to know how to turn off the auto updates too so this rubbish doesn't happen again in future.

Windows 10 Update 3/16/2017 caused FN problem and installed Synaptics pointing Device driver version 19.0.9.5 (for Lenovo) conflicts with my Toshiba Satellite [L775-S7248].
Solution:
Under This PC, under Manage, under Computer Management, under the Device Manager, under Synaptics pointing Device driver version 19.0.9.5 (for Lenovo), under Driver, Select "Roll Back Driver" It rolled itself back to 15.2.11.1 (2/3/2011). That worked; Keys 1, 2, 3, and Space Bar are working. Device Manager no longer says Lenovo, but Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad.
Good Luck

Notes:I kept trying to uninstall, Windows kept reinstalling 19.0.9.5, even after deselect "Automatically get the device app and info provided by your device manufacturer" (above). I went to Toshiba website downloaded, but would not install Synaptics pointing Device driver version 15.2.11.1, (Toshiba Windows 7 64 bit would not not install under Windows 10, I could not find one under Windows 8, and Toshiba does not have any support for Window 10 for this model on their website).
