Hello, I can't get the onboard spdif port to output any sound to my receiver. When I run the test in WIndows I can see the green bars moving, but no sound comes through the speakers and the receiver doesn't click when it receives a signal. In control panel there is an option to select the SPDIF Out as the default device so I think it is being recognized. I have also changed the settings in the receiver to try and get the sound to come through but to no avail. Does anyone know what could be going wrong here? If you need anymore info just tell me and I'll go find it.

Thank you!

The optical cable should not be sharply bended (allow at least a 5-inch radius for the bend).

Your motherboard don't have an audio coaxial output, just optical. However, you have a S/PDIF header on your motherboard (SPDIF_O), so you can use something like this:

Or the original one...
Hello,

Please check if the PC audio output format is the same as the input format of your receiver (PCM or Dolby digital). Also, check if the TOSLINK cable is fully inserted in the PC and in the receiver (you should see the light coming from the cable's end at the receiver side).

The computer sends both PCM and Dolby Digital. The receiver accepts both PCM and Dolby Digital also. The motherboard is a Gigabyte G1 Assassin 2 and the receiver is an Onkyo TX-NR515. The cable is snug in both ends, I heard them click. I'v never seen a light on the back of the receiver.

If you have no light at the PC output also, then the onboard audio is not working as it should. Try to uninstall/reinstall the audio drivers (use the ones from the Gigabyte website, not the generic Windows ones) and make sure you don't have any other digital audio outputs activated (as Audio over HDMI or such).

After downloading the new drivers and running the setup, it says it can't find any creative products even though the onboard sound is Creative X-Fi. Could this mean the onboad chip is bad? I'll look for the disk that came with the motherboard and see if there and other drivers on there too.

So I read around a bit and saw the optical cable could break inside pretty easily if it was crimped or curved or anything like that. My receiver also has two coax connections so I was think I would try that. Just one question, would the coax coming out of the PC come from the Line Out on the motherboard?

Also, you can build it by yourself if you have a soldering iron, a bifilar cable and an 100-Ohm resistor (just make sure the RCA female plug case is not in electrical contact with the PC bracket).
